Nationals run themselves out of a sweep
June 1, 2006 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Potomac Nationals News Release
Woodbridge, Va. - It looked like the Potomac Nationals had a shot at a sweep in a doubleheader against Myrtle Beach even after trailing 4-1 to start the day but after Brandon Powell's ninth inning heroics in the first game to pull out a 6-5 victory, the Nationals ran themselves out of opportunity in the night-cap and fell 6-3 to the Pelicans in eight innings.
To highlight the good, the Nationals trailed 4-1 when the suspended game from May 14 resumed. After getting the final out in the top of the fifth, the Nationals went to work right away as Tony Blanco smacked a double to left to score two and get the team within one.
After the Pelicans got one back in the sixth, the Nationals struck back in the eighth as Devin Ivany (2-for-4, double, run) scored on a wild pitch. Behind by one, Potomac used a walk, an RBI triple by Reggie Fitzpatrick, a hit batter and finally Powell's RBI single to right to win the first game.
In the second game though, it was a lot of lost opportunities that haunted the Nats. With a run already in and the score tied at two in the fourth, Fitzpatrick hit a hard ground ball to a drawn in J. C. Holt who threw home and had Devin Ivany nailed at the plate. Ivany, running on contact attempted to barrel over Pelican catcher Clint Sammons who held onto the ball for the second out of the inning.
In the fifth inning, down by one again, Blanco delivered another double with Marvin Lowrance on first. Lowrance ran through a stop sign at third by Manager Randy Knorr and was thrown out at the plate with what would have been the tying run. Trey Webb (3-for-4, two runs, RBI) then delivered his third hit of the game, a single to left that easily scored Blanco from second to tie it. Lowrance would have scored and should've given the Nationals the lead.
In the seventh, with the score tied and two out in the inning, Trey Webb strode to the plate with Ian Desmond at second and Lowrance at first. Desmond was thrown out trying to steal third ending the inning.
To cap a frustrating game where the Nationals couldn't seem to get a break, Alex Morales was tapped for three runs in the top of the eighth to give Myrtle Beach more than enough to hold on and earn the split.
Luke Montz finished the second game with a pair of RBI while going 0-for-2. Driving in runs with a sacrifice fly and fielder's choice.
These two teams will be back on the field Friday night at 7:05 p.m. in a single game. It's Armed Forces Night presented by HomeLoanLearningCenter.com and media partner WINC-FM. Kids can run the bases following the game. For more information or tickets, call (703) 590-2311.
