RAMAPO, New York - Alex Bardeguez hit a solo home run in the top of the eighth to give the New York Federals the road win over the Rockland Boulders on Friday night by a score of 3-2 in Can-Am League action.

Rockland starter Jon Velasquez had his best outing of the season for the Boulders. Velasquez, who had not thrown more than 5 1/3 innings so far this season, went eight innings, giving up just three runs on seven hits. The run support was not there for Velasquez, as those three runs were too much for the Boulders to overcome.

"I got the chance to go eight, I made one bad pitch, and that's it," said Velasquez. "I achieved my goal of seven innings. Now I can go out next time and do better."

"It's not on [Velasquez]," said Sean Smith. "Our loss is on the hitters tonight."

New York (4-23) started fast against Velasquez. After the first two batters reached base, Eddie Lantigua roped a single to left field to plate Alex Sumner. Bardeguez followed by grounding into a fielder's choice, bringing Stephen Pinto around to score, giving the Federals the 2-0 lead before Rockland's first at bat.

Jermel Lomack led off the first for the Boulders with a single. He then stole both second and third base. Sean Smith brought Lomack in from third with a sacrifice fly, leaving Rockland down 2-1 after the first frame.

The Boulders tied the game in the fourth on Tommy Giles' second home run of the season. Todd Jennings singled after Giles' solo shot and reached second after New York starter Jake Loye threw the ball away on a pickoff. A pitch hit Jonathan Candelier in his second trip to the plate, but he and Jennings were stranded after the Boulders tied the game at two.

After his second stolen base of the game and moving up to third on a ground out, Lomack was 90-feet away from giving Rockland the lead in the seventh. With the chance to take the lead, Smith struck out swinging, leaving the score knotted up at two apiece.

Jon Shepard pitched two strong innings of relief to earn the win for the Federals, giving up just one hit. Kent Worthington took the hill for the Federals in the ninth to earn his second save of the season.

"I thought Velasquez threw the ball extremely well tonight," said manager Dave LaPoint.

The Boulders (9-15) will host game two of this four-game series with the Federals at Provident Bank Park Saturday evening. First pitch is slated for 7:05 pm. The Boulders send John Muller (0-2) to the bump to try to earn his first win against New York's, Will Hassett (1-2).
