Helena Brewers News Release
Helena, MT - In what will undoubtedly go down as the craziest game all year, the Helena Brewers had a chance to win the game in the bottom of the tenth, with the winning run on third and nobody out. The Brewers could not get the run home, as Grand Junction scored in the top of the eleventh, winning 8-7 as Helena left the tying run in scoring position with nobody out. The Brewers were 3 for 22 in the game with runners in scoring position and left a season high 15 on base.
Down 4-3 going into the bottom of the sixth, the Brewers got the tying run to second but couldn't score. The same situation came about in the seventh, and a double play with one out ended the inning, but the call on a force out of LG Castillo was questioned, and manager Nestor Corredor was ejected. Grand Junction added on single runs in the eighth and ninth, and on a contested pickoff play at first, pitcher Logan Gillaspie was ejected.
However, the Brewers never gave in, as the first three reached in the bottom of the ninth, with Yeison Coca driving home a run with a single to make it 6-4. Alexander Martinez fanned the next two, but walked Pablo Abreu to load the bases. That set up Bryan Torres, who singled to left on the first pitch, scoring two runs to tie the game. Helena couldn't get the winning run across sending the game to extras.
Grand Junction scored the tie breaker run (which starts the inning at second in extra innings) on a fielders choice from Joey Bartosic, but that was the only run of the frame. Helena started the bottom of the tenth in the same spot, and Jesus Lujano reached on a bunt attempt that pitcher Michael Agis made a throwing error on. Agis then walked Je'Von Ward to load the bases for Brice Turang. Turang smoked a ball off of Agis that if it doesn't hit him goes into center field, but it deflected off the mound and only one run scored, tying the game at seven. Yet Agis bore down, getting a strikeout, force out at home, and ground out to end the inning and keep the game tied.
In the 11th, Grand Junction's Will Golsan was at second with one out, and sprinted to third on a grounder hit to Connor McVey, the third baseball. McVey tried to tag out Golsan but slipped, leaving runners at the corners with one out. Grant Lavigne hit sacrifice fly to give the Rockies the lead, and Helena couldn't manage to get the tying run home in the bottom of the frame, falling 8-7.
Helena returns to action tomorrow for Crosstown Night, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 PM. For more information on Crosstown Night and for tickets, visit the promotions page of helenabrewers.net.
