Published on April 6, 2019 under Texas League (TL1)
Midland RockHounds News Release
Through the first 16 innings of the season-opening series with the RockHounds, Frisco had scored one run on nine hits. In the last of the eighth inning Friday night, Preston Beck tripled the RoughRiders' run production with one swing. His three-run line drive home run into the right field corner broke a 1-1 tie and reliever Wei-Chieh Huang slammed the door as Frisco evened the series at a game apiece with a 4-1 win at Dr Pepper Ballpark.
Christian Lopes turned an 0-2 count into walk against RockHounds starter Brian Howard in the third. Lopes then stole second and scored the Riders' first run of the season on Charles Leblanc's RBI single. The 'Hounds tied the game in the next half-inning on a leadoff double from Mikey White and an RBI single from Dairon Blanco. The game stayed tied at 1-1 until Beck's decisive blast, off reliever Trey McNutt in the eighth.
Howard allowed one run on three hits over five innings, with Norge Ruiz going two scoreless innings out of the bullpen. Rangers prospect Jonathan Hernandez pitched into the sixth for Frisco, allowing one run on five hits and striking out seven. Huang was outstanding, facing six batters and striking out the last five, Luis Barrera overcame an 0-2 count to single against Huang in the top of the eighth, but was thrown out trying to steal second.
Notables
The 'Hounds had three leadoff doubles Friday night, but only one (White in the fourth) turned into a run.
In the first two games of the series (and season), the RockHounds have had a good number of scoring chances but are just 3-for-26 with runners in scoring position. Frisco, on the other hand, has had only seven at-bats with RISP (2-for-7).
Luis Barrera went 2-for-4 and is 5-for-9 (plus a walk) to open the season.
Dairon Blanco went 1-for-3 with an RBI and a walk. The lightning-quick outfielder also stole his first two bases of the season.
