Corpus Christi Hooks News Release

CORPUS CHRISTI - Amarillo scored five times in the third and its bullpen fired six innings of one-run ball as the Sod Poodles picked up the club's first-ever win by edging Corpus Christi, 7-5, Friday night before 4,568 fans at Whataburger Field.

The Sod Poodles (1-1) sent nine men to bat in the fifth, chasing lefty Brett Adcock (0-1). Two walks and a hit batsman led to a Luis Torrens two-run double. Jorge Ona followed with an RBI single and then promptly scored on a two-bagger by Brad Zunica.

Corpus Christi (1-1) responded with a four-spot in the home half against Jesse Scholtens. With two away in the frame, Granden Goetzman's pop up landed safely on the front slope of the mound. The misplay enabled Osvaldo Duarte to score from third and Stephen Wrenn to scamper home from second. Abraham Toro kept the line moving with a double to right-center, making it a 5-3 contest. Josh Rojas then cut the Amarillo lead to one with an RBI single to right field.

Blake Rogers (1-0), Trevor McGill, Dauris Valdez, and Andres Munoz limited the Hooks to two hits over the final six innings. Munoz stranded a pair in the ninth for the save.

Hooks lefty Kit Scheetz retired all four men he faced and Carson LaRue permitted just two runs and three hits over five innings. One of those knocks was a lead-off home run by Zunica in the ninth.

Wrenn reached base four times, notching a pair of singles and two free passes. Osvaldo Duarte, who homered Thursday, doubled and walked Friday night.

Brandon Bailey is slated to pitch Saturday night. The Sod Poodles plan to send Pedro Avila to the hill. First pitch 7:15 as all fans in attendance receive a Whataburger 15th season jersey.
