Amarillo Sod Poodles News Release

Corpus Christi, Texas - The Amarillo Sod Poodles fell 2-1 in 10 innings to the Corpus Christi Hooks on Saturday night at Whataburger Field, as Josh Rojas delivered a game winning RBI single in the bottom half of the 10th.

Amarillo received a solid pitching performance from starter Pedro Avila, who spun six innings of one-run ball while striking out five.

The only blemish of Avila's outing came in the second, when he issued a two-out walk to Rojas, who then stole second. Lorenzo Quintana followed with a run-scoring single to give Corpus Christ a 1-0 edge.

Hooks starter Brandon Bailey lasted just three innings, but danced in and out of trouble in both the first and second as the Sod Poodles left two runners on-base in each frame. Righty Justin Ferrell replaced Bailey in the fourth and tossed two scoreless innings.

Kazuhisa Makita replaced Avila and pitched a scoreless seventh while striking out a pair. Makita would also retire the side in order during the eighth.

Still trailing 1-0, the Sod Poodles pulled even in the eighth. Right-hander Brendan Feldmann, who had pitched two scoreless frames prior, was unable to field a tapper back to the mound off the bat of Owen Miller. He bobbled and threw it away down the right field line, allowing Miller to go to second base.

Feldmann was then replaced by righty Ronel Blanco. Hudson Potts stepped in and laced an RBI single to right field as Miller scored the tying run. Blanco escaped further trouble in the eighth with the game still even at 1-1.

Blanco and Amarillo reliever David Bednar traded scoreless frames in the ninth.

In the tenth, Blanco maneuvered around the automatic baserunner, striking out Buddy Reed and Miller while getting Potts to pop out to end the frame.

In the bottom half of the tenth, Bednar allowed the walk-off single to Rojas as Corpus Christi's automatic runner Stephen Wrenn came into score with the winning run.

The Sod Poodles and Hooks finish their four-game set on Sunday afternoon at Whataburger Field. First pitch is at 2:15 p.m.

Amarillo sends right-hander Lake Bachar to the mound while Corpus Christ counters with righty Tyler Ivey.

The game is aired on 940 AM KIXZ and via various streaming options. Sam Levitt has the play-by-play call.
