Rockford Outlasts Roosters in Twelve Innings

Richmond, Indiana - The Roosters dropped a rain-delayed game 10-9 Wednesday night. The RiverHawks got managed to work across the last run to win after four hours and forty minutes of baseball, including a fifty four minute rain delay. The Roosters scored in each of the first four innings combining for seven runs. Three came in the first off a three RBI double by Ty Herriott that scored Kevin White, Josh Hollingsworth and Tony Sanguinetti. Two more runs came in the second. Nate Gravley hit an infield single but advanced two bases on a throwing error. Alex Rybczak doubled to right-center to score Gravley and Hector Urena hit a sacrifice fly to score Rybczak. The sixth run came on a RBI single by Gerald Miller to score Josh Hollingsworth in the third inning. Mike Reese singled in the fourth and then advanced to third on two balks by Derek Roper to advance to third.

While the Roosters got their runs early in the game, the RiverHawks waited until the middle innings to get to business. They scored eight runs from the fourth to the sixth inning with nine runs overall. Jon Chappell got the big hit with a grand slam with one out that was part of a five-run inning that gave Rockford a 9-7 lead. The RiverHawks botched a double play ball in the bottom of the seventh which allowed Richmond to draw within a run at 9-8. That was when the call came to pull the tarp on the field as a heavy downpour invaded the stadium. The players were kept off the field for a delay before starting the game again in the top of the eighth.

Gerald Miller scored the tying run at 9-9 in the bottom of the eighth when Mike Reese hit a ball to the second baseman who then threw the ball away trying to go to first. An error from Hector Urena in the top of the 12th allowed Ryan Larson to score from second on a ball hit by Doug Schutt, which gave Rockford a 10-9 lead and eventually the win. Jason Glosser earned his third win of the year while Dan Caldwell took the loss and Jason Glosser got the save.

Richmond will wrap up the three-game series against Rockford on Thursday at 6:35 pm. Justin Olson (1-1, 4.50) will start for Rockford, while the Roosters starter is still to be determined. Thursday will be Mexican Fiesta Night at McBride Stadium. The first 500 fans through the gates will receive chips and salsa from El Rodeo Mexican Restaurant.
