ROCKFORD, IL - Rockford netminder Antti Niemi stopped all 26 Norfolk shots he saw as the Norfolk Admirals (1-3-0-2) were shut out by the Rockford IceHogs (6-1-0-0) 4-0 on Saturday night at the Rockford MetroCentre.
The IceHogs took a 2-0 lead through the first period of play with goals in the first and last minute of the period. Evan Brophey gave Rockford a 1-0 lead just 39 seconds in when he picked up a loose puck in the slot and beat Norfolk netminder Mike McKenna. Jean-Claude Sawyer sent a power play slap shot through a screen and past McKenna with just three seconds remaining in the first period.
Petri Kontiola netted another Rockford power play goal 13:20 into the second stanza when he batted a loose puck into the net in a goalmouth scramble.
Tim Brent closed out scoring with a shorthanded goal 14:17 into the final frame.
Mike McKenna (43 shots, 39 saves) got the loss in his first appearance of the season. Antti Niemi (26 shots, 26 saves) earned the shutout victory.
Norfolk was 0-7 on the power play. Rockford was 2-6.
The Admirals will close out their five-game Western Conference road swing tomorrow afternoon with a 4:00 faceoff against the Grand Rapids Griffins.
