High Point Rockers News Release

HIGH POINT, NC - It was a record breaking night at BB&T Point as the High Point Rockers defeated the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs 4-0.

Right handed pitcher Michael Bowden stole the show in the top of the first when he threw nine consecutive strikes for the first ever immaculate inning in Rockers history. He finished the evening with 70 strikes in 96 total pitches.

Not quite done, Bowden would go on to break the franchise strikeout record, previously held by right hander Joe Van Meter. Bowden threw 12 strikeouts in six and two-thirds innings to earn an impressive 0.98 ERA.

First basemen Richie Shaffer got the offense going with his first inning double that brought home right fielder Stephen Cardullo and center fielder Myles Schroder.

Three innings later, second basemen Michael Russell added another run to the Rockers' score with a solo home run in the first at bat of the fourth inning. Designated hitter Viosergy Rosa hit yet another solo shot in the bottom of the sixth for the final score of the evening.

Short stop Giovanny Alfonzo was a defensive nightmare for the Blue Crabs, fielding two separate balls bare handed, followed by two spectacular throws. Alfonzo capped of his defensive effort with a leaping grab, protecting Ryan Kelly and the Rockers' scoreless innings in the top of the ninth.

High Point's bullpen did not disappoint, keeping Southern Maryland scoreless for all nine innings of the game. Left hander Chase Huchinson threw 13 strikes in one and a third innings, followed closely by Kelly's five strikes to close the game.

The Rockers will turn around and face Southern Maryland again on Wednesday, July 31st at 11:00am. To purchase your tickets, call (336)888-1000 or visit www.highpointrockers.com.
