High Point Rockers News Release
LEXINGTON, KY - The High Point Rockers suffered a dual defeat on Friday night at Legends Field, as Lexington took both games in a doubleheader to open the four-game weekend set in Kentucky.
Starting pitching dazzled in game one, but the Rockers got the scoring started on a sac-fly from Ryan Grotjohn that made it 1-0 High Point in the third. Lexington quickly responded in the bottom of the inning on the one mistake pitch that Ryan Weiss made all evening, as Kole Cottam demolished a two-run shot that put the Legends ahead 2-1.
That score held from the third inning all the way until the end of the ballgame, as the Rockers pushed the tying run to third base with two outs in the top of the seventh but were unable to score. High Point pitching retired 14 of 18 Lexington batters on strikes in game one.
In the night cap, Lexington scored first and never looked back. Payton Robertson homered to lead off the bottom of the third and give the Legends a 1-0 lead. Then, another pair of runs came in the fourth when Ryan Grotjohn misfired a throw into foul territory that made it 3-0.
The Rockers drove in their first run in the top of the fifth, despite not having a hit, when Gavin Johns legged out a dropped third strike, followed up with a walk to DJ Burt and an error that allowed Ben Aklinski to reach. Grotjohn was then plunked on the first pitch of his at-bat to bring home the run. A Keenan O'Brien's RBI double in the bottom of the inning stretched it back to 4-1.
A massive four run sixth frame ballooned the Legends advantage to 8-1 and put a seal on the game. High Point grabbed one more run in the top of the seventh, but were nowhere near close enough to try to mount a rally, falling 8-2.
The pair of losses knocked High Point to a 19-14 record, while Lexington improves to 10-23. Game three of the series is set for tomorrow night at 7 pm.
