ROCHESTER RED WINGS GAME NOTES
Toledo Mud Hens (23-40) @ Rochester Red Wings (29-33)
Frontier Field - Rochester, NY - 7:05 p.m.
LHP Ramon Garcia (1-5, 6.45) vs. RHP Virgil Vasquez (2-4, 4.68)
TONIGHT'S GAME: After a dominating performance Friday night in Gwinnett that capped a series win and a 5-3 road trip, the Red Wings return to Frontier Field Saturday night (7:05 p.m) to open an 8-game, 9-day homestand against the Toledo Mud Hens (Tigers)... The Wings, winners of 11 of their last 16 games, are 27-22 since April 18 (2-11) and have moved back into 4th place in the IL North just 7.5 GB of Pawtucket... Meanwhile, Toledo comes to town with the worst record in the IL at 23-40 however they have won 3 straight and 7 of 10 entering this series. The Mud Hens are 19.0 GB of Indianapolis in the IL West.
WITH A WIN TONIGHT, THE WINGS...:
- Will extend their season-long home win streak to 5 games... The Wings won 6 in a row at home from 5/3-5/16/12 with two wins coming as the "road" team vs ESY... The last time ROC won 5 straight at home prior to last year was 8/10-8/14/10.
-Will move to three games under the .500 mark for the first time since April 11 when they were 2-5.
-Will be off to their best start (30-33) thru 63 G since the '09 season when they were 30-33 as well.
STARTERS SCRATCHED : Both teams' scheduled starters were scratched prior to first pitch. Toledo was scheduled to send southpaw Jose Alvarez to the hill but he was pulled and will be headed to the Big Leagues for the first time in his career. Alvarez led the IL in SO (76) and WHIP (1.01), was 2nd in ERA (2.42) and 4th in AVG (.216)... LHP Ramon Garcia will start in his place. Garcia started against the Wings on May 8 and suffered the loss allowing two runs on four hits in six innings.... LHP Pedro Hernandez was the Wings scheduled starter but a tight back bumped him off his start. RHP Virgil Vasquez who has flip-flopped between the rotation and bullpen will make the spot start. Vasquez tossed an inning of relief in Thursday's 11-3 loss to Gwinnett and made his last start on May 26 vs CHA (N/D; 5.0 ip, 5 h, r).
AWESOME ANDY!: LHP Andrew Albers tossed his first career complete-game shutout on Friday and the 5th complete-game shutout turned in by a Red Wings pitcher this season. Staked to a 7-0 lead before he ever toed the rubber, Albers pounded the strike zone early and often striking out a tied for career-high 7 while walking none over his 101-pitch, 74-strike performance. Albers, who won a career-high 4th straight decision, allowed just 6 hits (all singles) and didn't allow a runner to reach second base until two-out in the 8th inning. No Braves base runner reached third base all night. The southpaw retired 17 of the last 19 batters he faced, including 13 in a row at one point. The former 2008, 10th round selection of the Padres and 2011 free-agent signee of the Twins had pitched as many as eight innings just once in his career prior to Friday's gem.
WINGIN' COMPLETE-GAME SHUTOUTS : Albers' CG-SHO Friday was the 5th by a Red Wings pitcher this season -- the most of any team in all of baseball (MiLB & MLB). The only other team to have as many as four this season is the St. Louis Cardinals... The Wings have tossed 5 of the 27 (19%) CG-SHO's in the minor league's this season and are the ONLY team in the IL to have a pitcher toss a CG-SHO... Down in New Britain, RHP Trevor May has two CG-SHO's this season meaning Twins' farmhands have accounted for over a quarter (26%; 7 of 27) of all CG-SHO's in the minors this season.
-Prior to this season, Rochester pitchers had tossed a total of 5 CG-SHO's over the last four seasons.
-The last season the Wings threw at least 5 CG-SHO's was 2007 when five pitchers combined to toss six CG-SHO's.
-Rochester is on pace to toss 11 CG-SHO this season the most since the 1980 season when they also had 11.
MORE ABOUT LAST NIGHT...:
-The Wings won a road series against the Braves top affiliate for the first time since August 7-10, 1995
-The Wings matched their largest margin of victory on the season (11 runs)... Both games were 11-0 shutouts (5/19 @ LHV)
-Rochester recorded season highs in runs scored and hits in an inning when they scored 7 runs on 7 hits in the first frame.
-Everyone in the lineup except Eric Farris picked up a hit AND recorded an RBI... Only Farris and Ray Olmedo didn't score a run.
-After going 6-for-31 with RISP in the first 3 games of the series... The Wings went 4-for-6 with RISP in the 1st inning Friday.
BUTERA BACK: Red Wings catcher Drew Butera was reinstated from the disabled list after missing 60 games with a broken hand. Butera was hit by a Ramon Ortiz fastball on the first pitch he saw this season in the Wings second game of the year in Buffalo on April 5. Butera hit .279 (12-43) in 15 games with the Wings at the beginning of last season before being promoted to Minnesota on May 1 where he would spend the rest of the season. He batted .198 (22-111) with a home run and 5 RBI in 42 G with the Twins.
CLEMENT'S BIG NIGHT: Red Wings first baseman Jeff Clement went 4-for-4 with two home runs and four RBI. It was the 3rd time this season and the 9th time in his career that Clement has had a multi-homer game. Clement, who came into the game 3-for-23 on the road trip, notched four hits for the first time since 6/2/12 w/ IND and recorded 4 RBI for the first time since 7/19/10 w/ IND.
