Perez, Chiefs Shock PawSox with Late Rally

The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, defeated the Pawtucket Red Sox in their second consecutive comeback win, 4-3 on Saturday night. Eury Perez's seventh inning triple was the game-winner, as the Syracuse pitching staff held off the Red Sox bats.

The Chiefs' bats mounted the comeback in the bottom of the seventh inning. After a one-out double by Micah Owings, Kris Watts walked. The next batter, Francisco Soriano, ripped a single into left field to score Owings and tie the game at 2-2. Eury Perez followed with a triple into deep right field, driving in both Watts and Soriano to give Syracuse a 4-2 lead.

Pawtucket (36-26) got on the board quickly in the top of the first inning. Mitch Maier led off with a base hit into left field followed by a double from Drew Sutton. After a Will Middlebrooks strikeout, Ryan Lavarnway hit a sacrifice fly to center field, plating Maier from third base.

Syracuse (26-35) got its first run in the bottom of the second inning. After a two-out walk to Owings, Watts drew a walk of his own to put runners on first and second for Soriano. In his first game back from Advanced-A Potomac, Soriano ripped a single up the middle to score Owings from second, tying the game at 1-1.

The Red Sox took the lead in the top of the sixth inning.Maier walked to start the inning, then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Drew Sutton. Then, with two outs, Lavarnway singled into right field, scoring Maier to take a 2-1 lead.

Pawtucket's final run came in the top of the eighth inning. With two outs, both Middlebrooks and Lavarnway drew walks against major league rehabber Christian Garcia. The next batter, Bryce Brentz, singled on a line drive to left field, scoring Middlebrooks to cut the Chiefs lead to 4-3. Then, with runners on second and third, Garcia struck out Jeremy Hazelbaker to end the inning.

Chiefs pitcher Mike Broadway topped off a great day for Syracuse hurlers with a scoreless ninth inning to clinch the victory. Starter Danny Rosenbaum and Garcia combined for 8 innings of five-hit baseball and allowed just three runs.

The Chiefs and Red Sox play the second of four-game series Sunday at 5:00. Right-hander Matt Torra takes the mound for Syracuse while Pawtucket sends right-hander Brandon Workman.
