Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
PAWTUCKET, R.I. -- The Syracuse Chiefs staged a seventh-inning rally culminating in a two-run triple by Eury Perez to defeat the Pawtucket Red Sox, 4-3, Saturday in the opener of a four-day series at NBT Bank Stadium.
Just the eighth win in 29 home games for Syracuse, it came at the expense of the PawSox, who began their brief trip with an International League-best 19-11 road record.
Trailing 2-1 with one out in the seventh, Michah Owings doubled into the right-field corner off reliever Jose De La Torre (L, 2-1), who then walked Kris Watts. De La Torre's next pitch resulted in the evening's second RBI single by Francisco Soriano.
Watts and Soriano advanced to third and second, respectively, to set up Perez, who brought both home with his three-base liner into the right-field corner for a 4-2 advantage.
Pawtucket drew within a run following a pair of two-out walks in the eighth inning. Bryce Brentz singled to score Will Middlebrooks, who appeared in his fourth injury-rehabilitation game with the PawSox. But Christian Garcia (W, 1-0) struck out Jeremy Hazelbaker to end the threat with two men on.
Mike Broadway (S, 1) retired the side in order in the ninth to secure the save.
Pawtucket starter Rubby De La Rosa completed his longest outing of the season, completing 5.0 innings and allowing just one run on four hits and three walks. De La Rosa was the pitcher of record until Syracuse's rally in the seventh.
The Sox took a 1-0 lead in the first after Mitch Maier's leadoff single, a double by Drew Sutton and a sacrifice fly by Ryan Lavarnway.
After the Chiefs tied it on Soriano's RBI single in the second, Pawtucket again forged in front in the sixth inning. Maier, who went 2-for-3, drew a walk from Syracuse starter Danny Rosenbaum, advanced on Sutton's sac bunt and scored the go-ahead run on Lavarnway's long single to right field.
The PawSox and Chiefs are scheduled to play the second game of the series at 5 p.m. Sunday. While Syracuse is expected to start Matt Torra (0-2, 6.19), Pawtucket turns to 24-year-old Brandon Workman in his Triple-A debut.
Workman, a 6-foot-5 right-hander selected by the Red Sox in the second round of the 2010 draft, went 5-1 with a 3.43 ERA in 11 games (10 starts) for Double-A Portland.
