GETTING OUR MONEY'S WERTH: The Rochester Red Wings today woke up with the roosters to play the 3rd game of their 4-game series against International League North Division rival Syracuse (Chiefs). The Red Wings fell in the series opener 6-1 before winning last night 5-3. Following tomorrow's series finale it's back on the road for a pair of 4-game series at Columbus (Indians) and Toledo (Tigers). The Red Wings then return home on August 6 for a 6-game stay at Frontier Field.
a Both of the 2 remaining games of this series vs. Syracuse will be broadcast live on Time Warner Cable Sports (TWCS).
ALMOST THERE: A victory today would not only get the Red Wings back to .500, but it would give them 53 to match their win total from all of last year. The 2011 club went 53-91 and it was 23 games under .500 at 41-64 at this point last season. The 2010 team was 27 games below .500 at 39-66 at this juncture and went on to finish only 49-95.
a Rochester is off to its best 105-game start since the 2007 squad was 56-49.
CLIMBING THE LATTER: With last night's 5-3 victory over Syracuse and Buffalo's (Mets) 5-4 loss at Louisville (Reds), the Red Wings jumped to 4th place in the 6-team IL North Division. The Wings, however, are still 6.5 games out of first place and 6.0 games out of the IL Wild Card slot.
JULY HEAT: The Red Wings are tied with Columbus for the best record in the league in July, 1.5 games better than Charlotte (White Sox) and Norfolk (Orioles). A list of the Top 5:
Rank Team Record
T1. 15-8
Columbus 15-8
T3. 13-9
Norfolk 13-9
5. Indianapolis (Pirates) 14-10
a The Red Wings yesterday snapped their 3-game losing streak and an 8-game losing streak against Syracuse.
a With last night's victory, the Red Wings guaranteed their 2nd straight winning calendar month coupled with a 15-14 June. This marks the club's first back-to-back winning months since June and July 2007, when they went 16-15 and 18-13, respectively. One more win in July would give Rochester its most wins in a month since going 17-15 in August 2009.
A FUN RIDE: The Red Wings are 32-23 since sitting a season-worst 10 games below .500 at 20-30 on May 28. Going back further, Rochester is 38-30 beginning May 15. The Wings are also 43-37 beginning May 3, playing better than .500 baseball for more than half the season.
a Rochester hasn't lost more than 3 games in a row since a 4-game skid May 25-28.
HURLEY-MORNING GAME: Righthander Eric Hurley, who signed with the Twins on Sunday, today becomes the 17th different starter used by the Red Wings. Rochester used 18 different starters all of last year. Only Norfolk (23) and Charlotte (19) in the IL have used more starters this year, although Pawtucket (Red Sox) and Empire State (Yankees) have also used 17.
HOMER TIME: The Red Wings have hit just 2 home runs in their last 8 games at Frontier Field, a J.R. Towles 2-run blast July 13 vs. Toledo and Brian Dinkelman's solo homer Tuesday vs. Syracuse. Rochester has hit 37 homers along Morrie Silver Way compared to 25 on the road. Do note, however, the 37 long balls have come in 60 games at Frontier while the 25 on the road have come in just 45 contests.
PERDOMOMANIA: Luis Perdomo has posted 7 saves and a 0.92 ERA in 11 games since being promoted from Double-A New Britain, allowing just 2 runs in 19.2 innings. The 28-year-old has tossed 11.1 consecutive scoreless innings in his last 6-plus appearances, including 3.2 innings last night vs. Syracuse. He has struck out 18 and walked only 2 while in a Red Wings uniform.
a Perdomo has faced 39 batters in 6 games at Frontier Field and has given up only 3 hits and a walk.
a The longest consecutive scoreless innings streak by a Red Wings' reliever is 17.0 by Anthony Slama, who is currently on the 7-Day Disabled List.
CUP RUNNETH OVER: The Red Wings and Chiefs are in the midst of a hotly-contested battle for the Thruway Series Cup presented by Hillside Family of Agencies, the 3-team race for the best record in western New York among Buffalo, Rochester, and Syracuse. Here are the current standings, which reflect only games against one another:
Rank Team Record Winning %
