GAME #109 - ROAD GAME #55 - 6:05 P.M.
ROCHESTER RED WINGS (52-56) at COLUMBUS CLIPPERS (59-50)
RHP SHAIRON MARTIS (0-1, 8.50) vs. LHP DAVID HUFF (5-4, 5.04)
ALMOST IN LA LA LAND: The Rochester Red Wings tonight play the 2nd game of their 4-game series at Columbus (Indians), continuing an 8-game roadtrip that also includes a 4-game set at Toledo (Tigers) after Wednesday's offday. The Red Wings yesterday lost the series and roadtrip opener 8-5. Rochester returns to Frontier Field one week from tomorrow for a 6-game stay, the start of a stretch of playing 18 of its final 29 games at home.
a The Red Wings are in the midst of playing 16 of 20 games on the road, a stretch that started July 16.
a Meanwhile, back at the ranch, it appears Red Sox righthander Daisuke Matsuzaka will make a rehab start for Triple-A Pawtucket against the Empire State Yankees tomorrow at Frontier Field.
NEWS OF THE DAY: The Minnesota Twins yesterday traded left-handed pitcher Francisco Liriano to the Chicago White Sox in exchange for infielder Eduardo Escobar and left-handed pitcher Pedro Hernandez. The Twins announced that both Escobar and Hernandez will be added to the 40-man roster and assigned to the Red Wings.
a Liriano pitched for the Red Wings in 2005 and 2008, going 19-4 with a 2.63 ERA in 33 starts overall.
a Escobar, 23, entered the season as the White Sox's No. 10 prospect according to Baseball America and has spent the entire 2012 season with the big league club. He batted .207 in just 36 games (26 starts) with the Sox. The Venezuelan-born Escobar was signed by Chicago as a non-drafted free agent in 2008. He spent nearly the entire 2011 season in the International League with Triple-A Charlotte.
a Hernandez, 23, began the 2012 season with Double-A Birmingham, going 7-2 with 2.75 ERA in 12 starts before getting promoted to Triple-A Charlotte at the beginning of July. He is 1-0 with a 3.71 ERA in 3 games (2 starts) with the Knights. Hernandez was recalled to the White Sox for a July 18 start at Boston, and he gave up 8 runs on 12 hits in 4.0 innings in his major league debut.
I'M A MAN!!: In other roster news, the Twins today announced that they will recall righthander Jeff Manship in time for tomorrow's game against the White Sox. This marks Manship's 2nd promotion to the Twins this season. He posted no record and a 10.97 ERA in 8 games in his first go-round from May 29-June 27.
ALMOST THERE: The Red Wings tonight go for their 53rd win, attempting to match their win total from all of last year for the 4th day in a row. The 2011 club went 53-91 and it was 22 games under .500 at 43-65 at this point last season. The 2010 team was 30 games below .500 at 39-69 at this juncture and went on to finish only 49-95.
a Rochester is off to its best 108-game start since the 2007 squad was 58-50.
OH, DEAR: The Red Wings have lost 3 in a row, 6 of their last 7, and 7 of their last 9, but they are still 15-11 in July. That's the 3rd-best record in the IL in that time, trailing Columbus (18-8) and Indianapolis (16-11).
a Rochester hasn't lost 4 in a row since a 4-game skid May 25-28.
a With a 15-11 record and 3 games remaining in July, the Red Wings have guaranteed themselves their 2nd straight winning calendar month. The Wings went 15-14 in June and will post back-to-back winning calendar months for the first time since June and July 2007, when they went 16-15 and 18-13, respectively.
A FUN RIDE: The Red Wings are 32-26 since sitting a season-worst 10 games below .500 at 20-30 on May 28. Going back further, Rochester is 38-33 beginning May 15. The Wings are also 43-40 beginning May 3, playing better than .500 baseball for more than half the season.
a At 52-56, the Red Wings are 4 games under .500 for the first time since being 44-48 after a 4-3 win vs. Toledo on July 12, the first game back from the All-Star Break.
ROAD WOES: The Red Wings are just 16-30 in true road games, a record that does not include 8 contests as the "road" team against the Empire State Yankees at Frontier Field. (Empire State is playing 38 of its "home" games at Frontier Field while PNC Field in Moosic, Pennsylvania undergoes a season-long renovation.) Rochester has won just 2 road series all year, winning 3 of 4 games at Louisville June 14-17 and at Norfolk July 16-19.
TURPEN TIME: Righthander Daniel Turpen yesterday made his Triple-A debut and became the 28th different pitcher to appear in game for the Red Wings. Rochester used 28 pitchers all of last year.
a Tupren also became the 16th player, the 12th pitcher, from Double-A New Britain to get promoted and appear in a game with the Red Wings.
a Six of the 7 current members of the Red Wings' bullpen started the season with New Britain. The lone exception is Kyle Waldrop, who began the year on the Disabled List.
THE BLISS OF CHRIS: Chris Parmelee is hitting .321 (18-for-56) with 3 homers, 12 RBI, 10 walks, and a .424 on-base percentage in 14 games since the All-Star Break. He has hit safely in a season-high 8 straight games, going 12-for-33 (.364). He also has hit safely in 12 of his last 13 games, batting .346 (18-for-52).
THIS DATE IN BASEBALL HISTORY: In 2003, Red Sox switch-hitting third baseman Bill Mueller becomes the first player in Major League Baseball history to hit a grand slam from both sides of the plate in the same game, accomplishing the feat at Texas.
