Buffalo Beats Tribe 2-3

July 29, 2012 - International League (IL1)
Indianapolis Indians News Release

INDIANAPOLIS -- Starter Chris Schwinden allowed just a single run on three hits over seven innings to earn the victory and center fielder Matt den Dekker scored two of Buffalo's three runs and made an amazing run-saving catch to halt a potential Tribe rally as the Bisons went on to beat the Indians 3-2 on Sunday afternoon at Victory Field.

Indianapolis got off to a great start, plating a quick score in the bottom of the first as SS Chase d'Arnaud drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a wild pitch and came plateward on a single by 3B Matt Hague. However, after surrendering the score in the first frame, Schwinden (7.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 SO) would settle in, allowing just two singles the rest of the way, while setting down the final 12 batters he faced to earn the win and improve to 5-7 on the season.

After Indianapolis took the lead in the first, Buffalo would quickly respond with two scores of their own in the top of the second. The Bisons would take advantage of some control issues by Tribe starter Justin Wilson as 1B Adam Loewen drew a one-out walk and stole second before den Dekker followed with a base-on-balls of his own.

C Lucas May then came through with a clutch two-run double to left, plating both Loewen and den Dekker to give the Bisons the 2-1 lead. May and den Dekker would team up again in the seventh to give Buffalo what proved to be the game-winning run.

den Dekker led off the seventh with a double to right and, after advancing to third on a wild pitch, would trot home when May ripped a base hit to left. Despite scoring two of the Bisons three runs on the afternoon, den Dekker's biggest contribution came on a spectacular defensive play in the bottom of the fourth inning.

After 1B Jeff Clement led off the fourth with a sharp single to center, Tribe C Tony Sanchez stepped to the plate and launched a ball to deep center field that looked well on its way to bringing home Clement for the game-tying score. However, den Dekker would track down the ball and make a spectacular catch against the outfield wall to halt the Tribe threat, even losing his shoe in the process.

This play proved to be even more key as the Indians mounted a last ditch comeback in the bottom of the eighth. 2B Anderson Hernandez led off the inning with a base hit to right, before moving up to second when pinch-hitter Yamaico Navarro followed with a base-on-balls.

d'Arnaud then laid down a beautiful bunt and sped down the first base line, forcing a quick throw from the Buffalo catcher that glanced off d'Arnaud's back, allowing Hernandez to score to cut the lead to 3-2. Following the Bisons' miscue, the Tribe looked well on their way to at least evening the score as they had runners on second and third with no one out.

However, Buffalo would induce an infield groundout and tag out Navarro at home on a controversial fielder's choice, before striking out Clement to end the threat. Bisons reliever Fernando Cabrera (0.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB) would earn his second hold of the season despite allowing two hits and a run, while fellow reliever Robert Carson (1.1 IP, 1 H, 2 SO) would finish out the final 1.1 to earn his first save of the season.

Indianapolis starter Justin Wilson (5.0 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 5 BB, 7 SO) suffered the loss to fall to 8-5 on the season despite allowing just one hit and striking out seven over five innings as five walks proved to be the southpaw's downfall. Tribe relievers Logan Kensing (1.0 IP, 2 H, 1 SO) and Tim Wood (1.0 IP, 1 SO) each turned in scoreless relief outings in a losing effort.

With the victory the Bisons (53-56) even the series with the Indians (67-43) at one game apiece with game three scheduled for Monday at 7:05 p.m. The Indians are expected to send RHP Rick VandenHurk (9-3, 3.55) to the mound, while Buffalo is scheduled to counter with RHP Jeurys Familia (7-7, 4.88)

The contest will be televised on HTSN (Hometown Sports and News), available via cable or over-the-air on digital channel 6.2. The game will also be carried on WNDE 1260 AM-WFBQ-HD2, WNDE.com and via iheartradio, a mobile application for iPhone, Blackberry and Android phones with Howard Kellman and Will Flemming on the call. The pre-game show begins at 6:55 p.m.

Post-game quotes -- 2B Anderson Hernandez

(On starting a rally in the eighth inning with a leadoff hit) "I was just trying to get on base. I just took my pitch, got a hit and we scored a run."

(On being able to hit Buffalo starting pitcher Chris Schwinden) "He has good stuff. He throws a two-seamer outside and a cutter. He has a good changeup, but we just have to be patient. You've just got to be patient and try to do your best."

(On his excellent defensive play during the game) "This is the tool that I have: defense. I think that's why I'm here and still here playing, because I've got pretty good defense. It's easy for me and it's the thing I've got."
