GAME #75 - HOME GAME #36 - 7:05 P.M.
CHARLOTTE KNIGHTS (43-33) at ROCHESTER RED WINGS (34-40)
RHP SIMON CASTRO (NR) vs. RHP STEVEN HIRSCHFELD (0-1, 6.00)
OH, WHAT A KNIGHT: The Rochester Red Wings tonight play the 2nd game of their 4-game series against International League South Division leader Charlotte (White Sox). The Red Wings lost 3 of 4 games vs. Durham (Rays) to open the homestand and then took last night's series opener 3-0. After 3 more with Charlotte, the Wings will hit the road for a brief 4-game set at Lehigh Valley (Phillies) Tuesday-Friday. Then it's back home for a 2-game series against the Empire State Yankees next Saturday and Sunday.
a Tonight's game can be seen live on Time Warner Cable Sports.
a Charlotte will make a return trip to Frontier Field for a 4-game series with Empire State July 16-19.
KEEPING HEADS ABOVE WATER: The Red Wings are 25-24 beginning May 3, playing (slightly) better than .500 baseball for more than a 3rd of the season. More recently, Rochester is 20-17 beginning May 15. Also, since sitting a season-worst 10 games below .500 at 20-30 following a 4-1 loss at Charlotte May 28, the Red Wings are 13-10 in their last 23 games.
a The Red Wings yesterday defeated Charlotte 3-0 for their 6th shutout, their 5th at Frontier Field. That total includes one shutout as the "road" team against Empire State on May 4. The Wings last night allowed a season-low 3 hits for the 3rd time, just one night after yielding a season-high 20 hits to Durham. In fact, Durham logged a resounding 65 hits during the 4-game series at Frontier.
a The Red Wings last night defeated Charlie Leesman, the IL's ERA leader, handing him his first loss in 8 starts.
HAVING A FIELD DAY AT FRONTIER FIELD: The Red Wings are 24-19 at Frontier Field, including a 20-15 mark as the home team. They are unbeaten in 9 of their 12 series at Frontier, going 5-3-4.
a The Red Wings have already posted 5 shutouts at Frontier Field after registering all of 3 at the downtown ballpark last year. In fact, the 5 shutouts are already the most in one season at Frontier since they logged 6 in 2008.
a Rochester has a 3.14 ERA (131 ER/376.0 IP) at Frontier Field, the 3rd-lowest home ERA in the IL. (ERA includes 8 games against the Yankees at Frontier.) Only Indianapolis (2.24, 73 ER/317.0 IP) and Norfolk (3.05, 134 ER/396.0 IP) have lower ERAs at their home ballparks. (Norfolk's ERA includes 2 games as the "road" team against Empire State, make-ups of a pair of rainouts in Rochester.)
a The Red Wings have hit 25 of their 43 home runs at Frontier Field, including 12 in their last 10 games here.
THAT'S CHARLOTTE OF WINS: The Red Wings have already posted 3 wins in 5 games against first-place Charlotte after going just 2-6 against the Knights last year. The Wings went 1-7 against them in 2010 as well. One win in the next 3 games would guarantee the Red Wings their first non-losing season series against Charlotte since 2009, when they went 5-3.
a The Red Wings are a combined 6-10 against IL division leaders, including a 2-5 record against the North's Pawtucket (Red Sox) and a 1-3 against the West's Indianapolis. The Wings are 28-30 against the rest of the league.
a The Wings are 16-21 against IL teams with a current winning record. They are 18-19 against all other clubs. Do note, Rochester is 2-7 against Syracuse, which enters play tonight with a 37-37 record.
JUNE SWOON: The Red Wings are 12-9 thus far in June after going 9-14 in April and 13-17 in May. Rochester needs just 2 more wins in its final 8 games in the month to post its most victories in a calendar month since going 17-15 in August 2009. The Wings need only 3 wins in their last 8 contests of June to register their first winning record in a calendar month since August 2009 as well.
PITCH FORKED: The Red Wings entered play June 10 at Indianapolis ranked 3rd in the IL with a 3.45 ERA. In 12 games since, the Red Wings have posted a 5.80 ERA (67 ER/104.0 IP) to drop to 10th in the league with a 3.98 ERA. Rochester is 5-7 in that period.
a Samuel Deduno last night became the first Red Wings' starting pitcher to earn in a win in the last 7 games, working 6.0 scoreless innings. Red Wings' starters are 1-4 with a 9.42 ERA (30 ER/28.2 IP) in that time. A win tonight by Steven Hirschfeld would give Red Wings' starters 2 straight wins for the first time since Liam Hendriks and Cole De Vries turned the trick May 18 vs. Louisville (Reds) and May 19 vs. Gwinnett (Braves), respectively.
a Red Wings' starters are just 2-6 with a 8.23 ERA (43 ER/47.0 IP) in 12 games beginning June 10, the day after Liam Hendriks made his final start with the Red Wings before getting recalled to Minnesota.
a Wings' starters are 19-23 with a 4.16 ERA (169 ER/365.2 IP) overall.
FUN WHILE IT LASTED: The Red Wings last night failed to homer for the first time in 9 games, snapping an 8-game home run streak that was the club's longest since a 10-game tear July 18-26, 2009. Rochester hit 12 long balls during the 8-game run. It must be noted that Pedro Florimon yesterday hit a ball off the wall to the right of the visitors' bullpen, which would have been a home run had it landed 10 feet closer to the left-field foul pole.
a The Red Wings rank 2nd in the league with 12 home runs beginning June 14, trailing only Pawtucket, which has 13 in that time.
a The Red Wings have already homered 18 times in 21 games in June after hitting 15 homers in 30 games in May.
VOTE FOR PEDRO: Pedro Florimon has reached base safely in 9 of his 10 plate appearances in the last 2 games, going 4-for-5 with 5 walks out of the leadoff slot. He has hit safely in 4 straight games (7-for-13, .538) and in 5 of his last 6 contests (9-for-20, .450) as well.
