Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees News Release
Indianapolis, IN - The Indianapolis Indians used a six run bottom of the first inning knocking out Scranton/Wilkes-Barre starter John Maine (LP, 1-2) after just one third of an inning to win their seventh straight game with an 8-3 victory over Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The winless road trip continues as the Yankees have dropped six straight games on the eight game IL West trip to Louisville and Indianapolis.
Maine faced nine hitters in the bottom of the first inning, retiring only one before being lifted for reliever Nelson Figueroa. Gorkys Hernandez single up the middle to open the Indians first inning and moved to second when Maine over shot first base on a pickoff throw. After a walk put runners at first and second with none down, Sterling Marte made it 1-0 with an RBI single to left. Jake Fox was hit by a Maine pitch to load the bases and Jeff Clement made it 3-0 knocking in a pair of runs with a two RBI hit. Jose Morales made it 4-0 with an RBI single off Maine to left field scoring Clement. The final batter that Maine would face was the ninth hitter of the inning Brian Friday. Friday worked a bases loaded walk to increase the lead to 5-0 before Figueroa took over. The new SWB pitcher allowed one of the inherited runners to score allowing a walk with the bases loaded to Chase d'Arnaud to force home the sixth run of the inning. Maine lasted just one third of an inning allowing five hits, six runs (all earned) with two walks, one strikeout and a hit batsman.
The Yankees chipped away against Indians starter Rick VandenHurk (WP, 6-0) with one run in the second inning and two more in the third. Francisco Cervelli worked a one out walk and scored from first base on Brandon Laird's RBI double to left to plate the first SWB run of the game. Jack Cust cut the deficit in half with a two run homer off VandenHurk to right field, to cut the lead in half at 6-3. It was the team leading 15th home run and team leading 44th and 45th RBI's of the season.
VanderHurk pitched the minimum five innings required to pick up the win allowing three runs (all earned) on six hits with one walk and five strikeouts.
Indianapolis would extend the lead twice more with lead off homers in both the sixth and seventh innings off SWB reliever Manny Delcarmen. Starling Marte led off the sixth with his sixth of the season over the wall in center field while Brandon Boggs hit his sixth of the season leading off the seventh to close out the scoring at 8-3.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre has dropped a season high six consecutive games, which is the team's longest since a nine game losing streak from August 9-19, 2011. Indianapolis has won seven in a row and improves their IL best record to 46-29.
Game three of the four game series between the Yankees and Indians takes place on Sunday afternoon with a 1:05 PM first pitch from Victory Field in Indianapolis. Right hander Adam Warren (4-5, 4.09 ERA) gets the start for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre while Indianapolis counters with left hander Jeff Locke (5-3, 3.13 ERA).
