Syracuse Clubs G-Braves, 12-4

Syracuse, NY. - The Syracuse Chiefs move to one game above the .500 mark for the first time this season, as they send the Gwinnett Braves to their eighth straight loss with a 12-4 victory Saturday night at Alliance Bank Stadium.

The G-Braves remain six games behind Charlotte in the International League South Division, as the Knights lost to Rochester, 12-1, Saturday.

The Chiefs scored three runs in the bottom of the first against Gwinnett starter Julio Teheran. Jim Negrych pounded a one-out double to right, moved to third on a ground out and scored on a single to right by Chris Marrero to make it 1-0. Marrero scored from first on a double by Mark Teahen to make it 2-0, and Teahen scored from second on a double to left by Brett Carroll to make it 3-0 after the first. Teheran (L, 5-4) worked six innings for Gwinnett, allowing four hits, 5 runs (four earned), while walking three and he struck out two. Hughes was credited with 1.0 inning with three hits and four earned runs. Russell went 0.2 innings and surrendered three hits and three earned runs alongside two strikeouts. D.J. Carrasco pitched to and retired one batter in the bottom of the ninth.

Syracuse added two more in the bottom of the fourth. Teahen led off the inning being hit by a pitch from Teheran and then stole second. Carroll walked and both runners moved up on a passed ball. A sacrifice fly to right by Koyie Hill scored Teahen and gave the Chiefs a 4-0 lead. Carroll moved to third on the sac fly and eventually scored on a force play from Yunesky Maya for a 5-0 Syracuse lead.

The G-Braves battled back to get within a run of Syracuse. Tyler Pastornicky reached on an error and scored as Ernesto Mejia drove a two run homer to left to make it 5-2. It was Mejia's team-leading 14th home run of the season and he also leads the team with his 51 RBI. Stefan Gartrell followed with a single and Ruben Gotay walked, then Jose Yepez plated both with a long drive to left that was misplayed by the Chiefs' Xavier Paul, cutting the Syracuse lead to 5-4.

But the G-Braves' bullpen fell apart, as Dusty Hughes gave up a run in the bottom of the seventh to make it 6-4 Syracuse. Then Hughes and Adam Russell combined to give up six runs in the bottom of the eighth to make the final 12-4.

Maya (W, 5-5) picked up the win in 5.1 innings. He allowed four hits and four runs (one earned), while walking two and striking out three. Erik Arnesen worked 1.2 innings with one hit and one strikeout and Atahualpa Severino went one inning and yielded one hit, one walk and struck out one. Henry Rodriguez pitched the ninth and struck out one in his scoreless frame.

At the plate for the G-Braves, Mejia and Jose Constanza each had two hits, while Gartrell and Christian Marrero collected the rest of the hits for Gwinnett on Saturday.

Teahen was 2-for-3 for Syracuse with two RBIs and three runs scored. Marrero went 2-for-5 with two run scored.

The Gwinnett Braves (37-40) and Syracuse Chiefs (38-37) continue the four-game series Sunday night the third game at Alliance Bank Stadium. The G-Braves will have southpaw Jose Lugo (1-2, 3.72) on the mound against the Chiefs left-hander Zach Duke (8-3, 3.83). First pitch is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. at Alliance Bank Stadium, as Gwinnett will be looking to snap their season high eight-game losing streak.
