January 9, 2006 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Miami Majesty News Release
Sunrise, FL. Former South Florida high school star Sylbrin Robinson pumped in 21 points and added 13 rebounds in his first home game in a Pit Bulls' uniform to help Florida defeat the visiting Birmingham Magicians 126-93 at the BankAtlantic Center.
Robinson, an alumnus of Miami High School and former Northeastern University showed poise and skill in collecting a double-double in his initial South Florida outing. Andre Smith added all 20 of his points in the second half and Terrence Shelman had 17 points and 9 rebounds. Tim Hardaway added 15.
The Pit Bulls (11-3) trailed 35-31 with 4 minutes left in the 2nd quarter when they went on a sensational 19-0 run during the next 3 minutes and led 52-42 at intermission. Birmingham was led by guard Mike Dean who tallied 25 points. Marcus Doss contributed 21 and forward Derrick Russell provided 15. The Magicians never got closer than 15 in the 3rd period and trailed by as many as 38.
"It was great to finally play at home again," said Demetrius Ford, Pit Bulls majority owner and President. "We haven't played for our fans since December 8th due to rescheduling our Christmas week games. But the team gave South Florida a big win and the crowd was as loud and as excited as ever. Our win over the Magicians in Birmingham last Thursday was a great tune up for us, as we had to overcome a three-week layoff leading up to that game. The acquisition of Sylbrin Robinson last week by our VP of Basketball Operations Carl Collins proved to be a brilliant move, as evidenced by "Syl's" great contributions to our win. The kid's got a lot of game and he adds tremendous depth to a team already deep in talent."
Sylbrin Robinson is the cousin of Pit Bulls starting guard Marcus Barnes who was just ranked the 12th best minor-league basketball player in the nation by ProBasketballNews.com.
The Pit Bulls next game is on the road Saturday night at the Maryland Nighthawks with tipoff at 7pm. Florida's next home game is a holiday date with the undefeated Indiana Alley Cats on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Mon, Jan 16th at 3pm. All home games are played at BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise.
The Indiana game, as all home games, will be broadcast in South Florida on NewsTalk 1360 WKAT and on the internet at 1360WKAT.com. For more information, call 305 781 5901 or visit www.floridapitbulls.com or www.abalive.com.
