Manchester Monarchs News Release
MANCHESTER, NH - Defenseman Geoff Kinrade's game-winning goal came in the second overtime period as the Manchester Monarchs fell to the Binghamton Senators by a 2-1 score at the Verizon Wireless Arena Friday evening. The Senators have won two straight games in overtime, forcing what will be the decisive game seven tomorrow at the Verizon Wireless Arena with a 7:00 p.m. start time.
"Yeah, it was an ill-advised pinch in double overtime," explained Monarchs Head Coach Mark Morris following the game. "That's not real smart hockey, but the effort was there along with great goaltending for the most part."
"We got beat back to the net on the first goal and on that second goal we had a bad pinch and [defenseman Geoff Kinrade] made a great move on the wrap-around," explained Morris. "We also had a chance to win it off of a penalty shot - there's no better opportunity than to put it away and win the series right there, but now it's a game seven. We'll have to bounce back from this and refocus and get back after it tomorrow."
"We're just fortunate we have another day to live, but unfortunately this series should have been over. Not only tonight, but it should have been over in Binghamton, but we kept letting them back in the door. It's a hard lesson to learn for [young players]," concluded Morris.
The Senators would win the game with Kinrade's first goal of the post-season at 10:01 of the second overtime period. While cycling around the Monarchs zone, center Jim O'Brien fed a pass to right wing Erik Condra, positioned at the left half wall. Condra continued to cycle the puck to Kinrade, entrenched low in the Monarchs zone. After a quick stick handle behind the Monarchs cage, Kinrade wrapped the puck around the far post, and underneath the dive of Monarchs goaltender Martin Jones.
The Monarchs would open up the scoring at 9:02 of the second period with a goal by center Justin Azevedo, his third of the playoffs. After a face-off win to the left of Senators goaltender Robin Lehner, Azevedo drew the puck back to defenseman Viatcheslav Voynov, positioned at the right point. Voynov would then play catch with right wing Bud Holloway, stationed at the right wing half wall to open up the Binghamton defense. The play worked, as Azevedo dropped back into the high slot. Holloway fed Azevedo, who let go of a one time slap shot that Lehner couldn't corral, as the puck trickled under his arm and over the goal line.
The Senators would tie the game at 10:26 of the third period when right wing Bobby Butler netted his third goal of the playoffs. Condra found Butler with a pass, positioned at the left half wall. Butler then made a give-and-go pass to O'Brien, entrenched deep in the Monarchs zone. O'Brien snapped a quick pass back to Butler, who crashed the net while firing home a shot under the blocker of Jones for the equalizer.
Right wing Bud Holloway would earn a penalty shot at 4:55 of the second overtime period after Condra was penalized for the intentional dislodging of the net. Holloway would skate the puck into the zone, make a quick deke in the slot, and let go of snap shot that was deflected away by Lehner to continue the second overtime period.
Jones (2-1) drew only his first loss of the post-season, stopping 43-of-45 shots over 90:01 minutes of play. Lehner (2-0) remains undefeated in the Calder Cup Playoffs, as he halted 51-of-52 shots on net.
Manchester was 0-for-2 on the power play. Binghamton was 0-for-3 with the man advantage.
