Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
TRAVERSE CITY, MI, January 29, 2007: The Traverse City Beach Bums are excited to announce the re-signing of Robbie McClellan, meaning the Beach Bums will have all five members of their starting rotation from 2006 back in 2007, an unprecedented feat in the Frontier League.
McClellan, originally a 12th round draft pick of the Kansas City Royals in 2003, was a force for the Beach Bums in 2006, especially down the stretch drive. Going 8-5 overall with a 3.39 ERA, McClellan went 5-0 with a 2.13 ERA in six starts between August 8th and the end of the season.
The right-hander's best start came in a critical game against divisional rival, Chillicothe on August 24th, when Robbie mowed down the Paints' hitters while tossing a 3-hit shutout, walking just two and striking out 10. The win kept the Beach Bums in a tie with Washington for the final playoff spot in the East Division and pulled TC within a pair of games of Chillicothe for first place.
Like the rest of his Beach Bums teammates, McClellan forced batters to work their way on base allowing just 2.52 walks per nine innings. Batters did not fare too well in having to hit their way on either as opponents batted just .232 against McClellan.
The Beach Bums open their 2007 season on the road against their division rivals the Kalamazoo Kings, Wednesday May 23rd, before playing their home opener on May 25th against the Kings. It will be the first Fireworks Friday of the season. The team's gift shop is currently open for business from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday to help get Traverse City fans through the winter months.
