PHOENIX, Ariz. - Ashton Rome scored a hat trick and added another goal in the shootout to lead the Phoenix RoadRunners past the Las Vegas Wranglers 7-6 Tuesday night in front of 2,085 fans at US Airways Center.

The RoadRunners (7-5-2) opened up the scoring right away when Rome scored 10 seconds into the game off a pass from Matt Fornataro. Dane Crowley had the other assist as Phoenix took an early 1-0 lead.

"Ashton played a good game," RoadRunners head coach Brad Church said, adding that he can be a dominant player. "He's set the bar and we expect him to be consistent."

The Wranglers (5-6-2) came back quickly, however, when Justin Taylor scored at 2:37 from the left of RoadRunner goalie Kyle Jones. Shawn Limpright had the assist on the goal that tied the game 1-1. Just over a minute later Phoenix took a 2-1 when Fornataro scored an unassisted goal that went over the left shoulder of Wrangler goalie Brent Krahn at 3:55. Tyler Mosienko tied up the game for Las Vegas again, though, when he scored off a rebound from in front of the crease at 17:39. Chris Neiszner and Bret Tyler had the assists as the Wranglers outshot the RoadRunners 17-9 going into the first intermission.

The Wranglers took their first lead of the game when Neiszner scored right in front of Jones at 7:56 of the second period. J.D. Watt and Limpright had the assists as Las Vegas went up 3-2. The RoadRunners tied the game at 3-3 when Mitch Carefoot scored off a rebound with Krahn sprawling across the crease at 13:08. Kimbi Daniels and Michael Wilson assisted as the tie would hold through the end of the period.

Phoenix came out in the third period with a goal by Rome who scored top-shelf off a pass from Fornataro at 2:45. Brett Peterson had the other assist at the RoadRunners took a 4-3 lead. The Wranglers tied the game at 4-4 at 8:37 when Limpright scored a goal that was assisted by Hugo Carpentier and Jason Dest.

The Wranglers took a 5-4 lead when Neiszner scored from the right of Jones at 13:17. Tyler and Mosienko assisted. Neiszner gave Las Vegas a 6-4 lead when he scored his third goal of the game at 17:18. The RoadRunners came back, however, at 18:14 when Rome scored his third of the game right after a faceoff. Daniel Sisca had the assist as the Wranglers still held a 6-5 lead. Then with Jones pulled, Phoenix was able to tie up the game and force overtime when Mitch Carefoot scored off a pass from Merit Waldrop.

"We brought (Waldrop) in and knew he brought a unique skill-set to the team," Church said, adding that he feels Waldrop will be a good addition for the team. "We made two big mistakes that cost us, but we were resilient and battled back."

Overtime was scoreless as Las Vegas outshot Phoenix 4-3, forcing a shootout. The RoadRunners won the shootout 3-1 as Waldrop scored the winner with the other two goals coming from Rome and Daniels.

Las Vegas out-shot Phoenix 41-33. Jones made 35 saves to improve to 1-0-0 on the season. The RoadRunners went 0-3 with the power play while Las Vegas was 0-3 with the man-advantage.

The RoadRunners continue a three-game home-stand at 7:05 p.m. Wednesday when they welcome the Bakersfield Condors for the opener of a two-game series.
