RoadRunners Rally to Even Series

CALGARY, AB - A.J. Valentine's two run single in the eighth inning proved to be necessary insurance as the St. George RoadRunners held off the host Calgary Vipers 7-6 at Foothills Stadium on Tuesday night.

The single put St. George up by three runs, 7-4. The Vipers scored two in the bottom of the eighth until Bartolome Fortunato recorded the final four outs for his fourth save of the season. RoadRunner starter Eric Van Slyke (2-1) earned the win allowing four runs, two earned, on nine hits. Van Slyke struck out eight batters in six innings.

Alan Webb was dealt the loss (0-1) for the Vipers after surrendering a go-ahead solo home run to Yosvany Almario in the seventh.

Angel Sanchez, Cody Nowlin and Brad Netzel each tallied three hits. Sanchez had two doubles, a single and knocked in three. Nowlin had a double and a pair of singles while Netzel slapped three singles with an RBI. The RoadRunners totaled 15 hits on the night.

Mark Okano had two doubles and a single knocking in two to lead the Viper 12-hit attack. LF Drew Miller slugged a solo homer, his fifth, in the home fourth.

St. George improved to 13-5 on the series and ensures they will leave Calgary with the best record in the GBL. The Vipers remain atop the Northern Division at 11-6.

The series finale and rubber match is Wednesday night at 7:00pm. St. George will start Monte Mansfield (1-0, 8.59) while Calgary counters with Hideki Nagasaki (1-0).
