Victoria Seals News Release

Fullerton, CA - With their six-game road trip shifting to southern California, the Victoria Seals took on the Orange County Flyers on opening day at Goodwin Field. The Flyers sent Jesse Smith (1-2) to the mound, while Victoria responded with Eduardo Baeza (1-2) in a pitching rematch from the teams' last meeting in Victoria.

With the ring ceremony and opening pitches out of the way, Orange County gave their home town fans something to cheer about early on. Lead-off batter Damian Jackson got the game going with a single, and scored on an RBI single from the next batter, Nick Guerra, to put the home side up 1-0. The Flyers would extend their lead when a double from former major leaguer Robert Fick scored Guerra and give Orange County a 2-0 advantage.

The Seals pulled even in the third inning, capitalizing on a pair of infield errors. First, Flyers' third basemen Julian Benavidez couldn't handle a sharp hit from Sergio Pedroza to cut the lead in half. Then, with two men on, Brian Rios hit a ground ball up the middle but Guerra couldn't make the play to first, allowing Wilver Perez to cash in on the overthrow.

With two men on and none out in the fifth inning, Baeza came up with an early play-of-the-year candidate. Diving to make a catch on a bunt from Jackson, Baeza then relayed the ball to second base for the double play. Moments later, a quick pick-off move from Baeza caught Steve Boggs for the third out of the inning.

Orange County would regain their lead in the sixth, though, using back-to-back solo home runs to right field from Guerra and Fick to jump out front 4-2. Unable to muster a comeback, Victoria falls in the first contest from Goodwin Field, losing for the second straight time to Orange County.

Jesse Smith evens his record with the victory, improving to 2-2 this year. Eduardo Baeza falls to 1-3 early in the season, despite picking up six strikeouts in the losing effort. Both Nick Guerra and Robert Fick picked up a pair of RBI's in the win, finishing 2-for-3 and 2-for-4, respectively.

Games two and three of this series are set for a double header on Wednesday evening. The first contest is scheduled for a 5:00 p.m. (PT) start, with game three going at 7:30 p.m. (PT). As always, fans can tune into the Seals' live broadcast with Mike Walker, online at www.victoriaseals.ca.

The Seals return home on Friday, June 12 to take on the North Division leading Calgary Vipers for the first of three games at Royal Athletic Park. Friday is also Viva Las Vegas Night at the ballpark, when one lucky fan will win a trip to Las Vegas, Nevada. Get your tickets now at www.selectyourtickets.com, or call (250) 220-7777.
