Roadrunners Inch Closer To First With 6-5 Victory

EDINBURG, TEXAS ---- The Edinburg Roadrunners are now two games out of first place in the United League standings after defeating the San Angelo Colts 6-5 Tuesday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.

The Colts (45-29) got the scoring started in the top of the third with an RBI groundout by Selwyn Langaigne that allowed Rich Paz to score giving San Angelo the 1-0 advantage.

Robert Matlock and Wilmer Pino started the bottom of the third with back-to-back singles putting runners at first and second for Sergio Guerrero who then hit a two-run double to deep left center field that allowed Matlock and Pino to score giving Edinburg (43-31) the 2-1 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth Bryon Smith doubled to right field and Vincent Blue followed with a single to put runners on the corners. A wild pitch from Colts starter Brett Lester allowed Smith to score from third and Blue to move up to second for Osiel Flores who then hit an RBI single to left field allowing Blue to touch home plate making it a 4-1 game.

The Colts scored against Edinburg's starter Danny Rondon in the top of the sixth with an RBI double by John Anderson that allowed Bryan Frichter to score from first. Butch Ballez followed with an RBI single that drove in Anderson from second making it a 4-3 game in favor of the Roadrunners.

Jason Landreth gave San Angelo the lead in the bottom of the eighth with his 18th home run of the season making the score 5-4.

Smith tied the game for the Roadrunners in the bottom of the eighth with his sixth home run of the season. Matlock singled with two outs against Colts reliever Douglas Brandt (1-4) then stole second and a throwing error by Colts catcher Hank Lanto allowed him to go to third base. Pino followed with an RBI double to right center that allowed Matlock to score giving Edinburg the 6-5 lead.

Kelly Casares pitched a scoreless ninth for his 15th save of the season giving the Roadrunners the 6-5 victory and extending their win streak to four.

Edinburg and San Angelo will play the third game of this four-game series Wednesday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium. Eric Montoya (5-3) is expected to face Ezequiel Astacio (8-1) with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
