San Angelo Colts News Release

Edinburg, Texas---The Colts had been fighting all night, but the players' efforts were not enough to overcome another bullpen meltdown. San Angelo (45-29) suffered it's fourth consecutive defeat and lost for the seventh time in eight games. Edinburg (43-27) took down the frontrunners in the ULB 5-4. The Roadrunners moved to within two games of the Colts in the United League Standings.

Starters, Brett Lester and Danny Rondon, were not involved in the decision. Lester lasted a season high 5.2 frames allowing four runs while Rondon dealt 6.1 innings and gave up four as well.

Earning the victory was Aaron Guerra (3-4) as he delivered a scoreless eighth. Chace Vacek (2-4) takes the loss as the right-hander squandered two runs in 1.1 innings of work.

Home pitching remained unscathed until the third inning. With one out, Rich Paz walked and Ronnie Gaines laced a double down the left-field line which set up runners at second and third. Selwyn Langaigne gave the Colts the lead with a sharp ground ball RBI to first base. San Angelo led 1-0 after the top of the third.

Colts negative trends, however, continued as the starter surrendered two scores in the bottom of the frame. It all started with one out as Robert Matlock and Wilmer Pino singled before Sergio Guerrero cleared the two off the basepaths with a double. Edinburg jumped ahead 2-1 after three innings.

A double by Bryan Smith began the bottom of the fifth frame. Vincent Blue singled to left field placing runners at the corners. A wild pitch delivered by Brett Lester brought in the third Edinburg run. A single by Osiel Flores followed, Blue scored and the Edinburg lead extended to three.

The Colts garnered their second and third runs of the contest in the sixth inning. After a hit-by-pitch to Bryan Frichter, a two-out double to left-center off the bat of John Anderson brought in Frichter from first base. A Butch Ballez single scored Anderson, San Angelo faced a one-run deficit.

San Angelo rallied further to take the lead in the top of the seventh. After a one out walk by Langaigne, Jason Landreth launched his 18th home run of the season. The two-run shot propelled the road squad to a 5-4 edge.

Bryon Smith would answer the bomb by Landreth with his sixth homer of the season. The solo shot to left in the bottom of the eighth knotted the affair at five. The offense was unrelenting; with two outs Robert Matlock singled, stole second and advanced to third on an overthrow by Hank Lanto. Pino bruised a double to drive in Matlock. The score was 6-5 Edinburg and San Angelo was unable to push another run across.

Tommorrow is the third of a four game set between the San Angelo Colts and the Edinburg Roadrunners. Game time is set for 7:05 P.M while the Kemps Ice Cream pre-game show is slated for 6:50.
