
Broncos Rally Falls Short Against Thunder

Robstown, TX-The Laredo Broncos battled back from an eight run deficit, but came up short as they lost to the Coastal Bend Thunder by a score of 8-7 at Fairgrounds Field, on Tuesday.
The Thunder started the score in the third. Amadeo Zazueta hit a sacrifice fly that scored Michael Lewis. Later in the inning Leivi Ventura hit an rbi single that scored Dustin Smith. That gave Coastal Bend the 2-0 lead.
The Thunder added on to their lead in the fourth. Michael Lewis hit an rbi single that knocked in Bryan Vickers. Later in the inning with no one out and the bases loaded, Amadeo Zazueta hit a sacrifice fly that scored Alfred Joseph. After a single reloaded the bases, Manny Mejia hit a two run double. That was followed by a two run single by Alex Fernandez. That was it for Broncos' starter Will Palmer, as Carlos Alvarez came into the game. Alvarez finished off the inning, as the score was now 8-0 in favor of the Thunder.
Palmer lasted only three and a third innings for the Broncos. He gave up eight runs, seven of which were earned, on 11 hits. He did not walk a batter and struck out three.
The Broncos finally got on the scoreboard in the fifth. David Cardona and Andres Santos hit back to back singles to start the inning. Then with one out Juan Senreiso hit an rbi single, that knocked in Cardona. Then with two outs Luis Ugueto hit a two run single that score both Santos and Senreiso. That made the score 8-3.
Laredo inched closer in the sixth. The Broncos loaded the bases with one out on singles by Mario Mendez, David Cardona, and Andres Santos. A passed ball allowed Mendez to score and everyone else to move up a base. Robert Moron then hit a sacrifice fly, which scored Cardona. The score was now 8-5 in favor of Coastal Bend.
The Broncos made it a one run game in the top of the seventh. Derek Beckman was on third base and Mario Mendez at first with two outs. Mendez got into a run down between first and second, which allowed Beckman to score. Mendez went to second on the throw home. David Cardona then hit an rbi single that scored Mendez. That made the score 8-7.
Fernando Rijo came in for the Broncos and pitched a scoreless eighth, as Laredo trailed by one run heading to the ninth.
Benny Cepeda came in for the Thunder looking to close out the game. He kept the Broncos off the scoreboard, as Laredo lost their fourth straight game by a score of 8-7.
The Broncos scored 7 runs on 13 hits and had 1 error while the Thunder scored 8 runs on 11 hits and had 2 errors.
The Broncos are now 22-52 on the season while the Thunder are 34-39. The Broncos will next be in action Wednesday August 26th, as they play game three of a four game series against the Coastal Bend Thunder in Robstown at 7:05.
