Roadrunners drop double-header

EDINBURG, Texas---- The Edinburg Roadrunners (6-5) lost both games of their double-header to the Amarillo Dillas (7-4) on Sunday night at the Amarillo National Bank Dilla Villa. The Dillas won both games in walk-off fashion with game winning singles in the bottom of the seventh inning.

In game one of the double-header, Pedro Flores took the mound for the Roadrunners but did not factor in the decision after allowing three runs, on six hits and striking out five in five and two thirds innings pitched.

The Roadrunners got Flores the lead in the top of the second inning. After back to back singles by Bryon Smith and Eric Gonzalez, Roadrunners' manager Vince Moore called for a double steal. With the throw going to third base, Dillas' third baseman Andrew Wong allowed the ball to get by him which allowed Smith to score for a 1-0 Roadrunners' lead.

The Dillas answered right back in the bottom of the third inning when Carlos Figueroa hit a sacrifice fly to score Keanon Simon from third to tie the game at one.

The Dillas took the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning on an RBI single by Sam Mclain which scored Stantrel Smith from third for a 2-1 score in favor of Amarillo.

The Dillas scored another on a solo homerun by Terrance Mclain in the bottom of the sixth inning to make the score 3-1.

But the Roadrunners would get to the Dillas' bullpen in the bottom of the seventh inning. Angel Reyes hit his first homerun of the season to make the score 3-2. Amado German followed with a single and then was moved over to second on a sacrifice bunt by Osiel Flores. After moving to third on a groundball, German came in to score on an RBI single by Vincent Blue to tie the game a three.

The Dillas won the game in the bottom of the seventh inning with their second walk-off hit of the series when Stantrel Smith hit a single that scored Figueroa from third for a 4-3 Dillas victory.

In game two of the double-header, Bryan Herrera made the start but only lasted three innings after he allowed two runs on three hits and striking out four. He did not factor in the decision.

The Roadrunners once again got out to an early lead. In the top of the fourth inning, Eric Gonzalez led off with a single and then came around to score after an error by Trent Lockwood which made the score 1-0.

Lockwood then made up for the error with a two-run homerun in the bottom of the fourth inning which gave the Dillas a 2-1 advantage.

But the Roadrunners answered in the top of the fifth inning. Robert Matlock led off with a triple to deep right field. He then came in to score on a sacrifice fly by Carlos Hereaud which tied the ball game at two.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Dillas broke the tie. After a leadoff double by Keenon Simon, Andrew Wong drove him in with an RBI double to make the score 3-2. After Wong moved over to third on a wild pitch by Brian Martin allowed Wong to score from third and make it a 4-2 ballgame.

Matlock started the top of the seventh inning with a walk then moved to second on a single by Hereaud. With runners at second and third with one out, Eric Gonzalez then hit a two-run single to right field which scored Matlock and Eunique Johnson, who pinch ran for Hereaud, to tie the game at four.

But in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Dillas once again ended the game with a walk-off hit, their third game in a row, off the bat of Stantrel Smith who singled to left which scored Carlos Figueroa for a 5-4 victory.

The Roadrunners and Dillas will complete their four-game series on Monday night at the Amarillo National Bank Dilla Villa. Eric Montoya (2-0) will make his third start of the season as he tries to snap the three-game losing streak for the Roadrunners with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
