St. George RoadRunners News Release

RENO - The St. George RoadRunners notched their third win in a row to start the final regular season road trip of the season with a 12-6 victory over the host Reno Silver Sox.

Three STG players had huge games to pace the visitors. Starter Gregorio Martinez (3-0) battled past a rough start to earn his third victory of the year throwing eight innings. Ivan Reyes and Juan Serrano hit two homers and knocked in five a piece leading the offense.

Reno attacked the scoreboard and built a three-run lead in the first inning. Gary Harris singled and scored when Andre Alvarado doubled to right-center. After Alvarado stole third, he scored on a John Hattig RBI-ground out. Steve Alexander provided the exclamation point with a massive solo homer to left.

St. George answered with two outs in the next inning. Liu Rodriguez reached on an infield single, but had to leave the game after injuring his shoulder sliding into first. Serrano entered as a pinch runner and trotted home after Reyes hit his first homer, a two-run shot on a first pitch fastball.

The Sox plated a run after DH Brian Mason doubled and stole home on a double steal with Alvarado.

The RoadRunner third proved costly for Reno and starter Mario Guilin. Ryan Stevenson walked and advanced to second on a Greg Lemon single. Seth Loman reached on a fielder's choice, moving Stevenson to third. Angel Sanchez singled to plate Stevenson. DH Kyle Wells, making his St. George debut singled off John Hattig's glove at third to load the bases for Serrano. On Guilin's first pitch, Serrano doubled to left scoring two. Four pitches later, Reyes slugged his second homer to bring in the final three. St. George led for the first time 8-4 after a six-run inning.

Guilin (3-1) would leave after four innings due to an undisclosed injury. Grant Ledbetter threw three solid innings of relief to keep STG at bay.

Reno climbed within two in with a Harris solo homer and Alvarado stealing home, during another double steal, in the seventh.

Kevin Frederick entered the game in the eighth and surrendered two runs. Serrano cleared the fence in center to lead off the inning and Lemon doubled in Reyes, who had singled. Scott Schneider did not fare much better in the ninth. Sanches singled and advance to third on a wild pitch and a passed ball. With two outs, Serrano went deep again to left to push the RoadRunner lead to six.

Claudio Galva relieved Martinez in the ninth and retired the top of Reno's lineup in order with a fly ball and two strikeouts.

St. George improves to 23-17 in the 2nd half and gains a half game on the idle Long Beach Armada for the top spot in the Southern Division. Reno dropped their tenth in a row, 11-28 in the second half.

The final game of the series is Thursday night from Peccole Park. St. George will hand the ball to Kevin Cooper, the 2008 Continental Baseball League Pitcher of the Year, for his GBL debut. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm Pacific.
