August 28, 2008 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Calgary Vipers News Release
A eight run fourth inning was the difference as the Calgary Vipers were defeated 8-3 by the Edmonton Cracker-Cats at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta in front of 1919 fans. The Vipers took the early 2-0 lead in the game but got knocked around in the fourth frame and that was the only time Edmonton scored. At the plate the Snakes left 13 runners on base in the game and struck out 14 times. With the loss Calgary is now 18-22 in the second half of the season and 44-40 overall.
Nelson Castro extended his hitting streak to 14 games with a leadoff single in the bottom of the first inning and with two outs he came around to score on a Felix Jose run batted in double for the 1-0 lead. The double by Jose extended a hitting streak for him to ten games.
Calgary doubled their lead in the bottom of the third inning thanks to a leadoff single by Jorge Mejia who stole second base, moved to third on a failed pickoff by Eric Van Slyke for a throwing error, and scored on another Jose RBI double for the 2-0 advantage.
Edmonton exploded in the top of the fourth frame for eight runs and a 8-2 lead. Juan Infante started it with a walk, Carlos Arroyo and Jose Morban hit back-to-back RBI doubles, Chris Van Rossum plated a run with a single, and Jose Valdez smacked a two run shot for the first five tallies. Jonathan Castro followed with a base hit, Jordan Lundberg scored him with a double, Lundberg then scored on two wild pitches, Infante walked, and after stealing second base he scored on a Arroyo base knock to conclude the scoring.
The Snakes got a run back in the bottom of the sixth inning when Richard Austin, who was making his debut, walked, Patrick Arlis singled and on the play Arroyo committed an error to allow Austin to advance to third where he scored on a Colin Moro RBI single for the 8-3 score.
Sean Kramer threw two and two third innings in relief and allowed only one hit for a run while striking out three. Reggie Rivard took over for Kramer and tossed two scoreless innings striking out four and the great bullpen work continued as Mac Suzuki pitched a perfect ninth inning in striking out another pair. Van Slyke (9-4) picked up the win in striking out nine in six innings while Evan Greusel (9-4) recorded the loss.
The Calgary Vipers announced their 2008 season ending awards and the three winners were Nelson Castro for Most Valuable Player, Evan Greusel for Most Valuable Pitcher, and Colin Moro for Rookie of the Year.
