Road Woes Continue on Friday

June 2, 2006 - Texas League (TL1)
Springfield Cardinals News Release

The Springfield Cardinals dropped their third consecutive game, losing the series opener in Frisco, as the RoughRiders picked up a 5-1 win on Friday night at Dr Pepper Ballpark. The loss drops the Cards to 1-4 on the current 11-game road trip and now puts them a full game behind Tulsa in the North Division.

Frisco starter John Danks (4-4) was practically untouchable, retiring the final 14 hitters he faced. The left-hander gave up just one run on three hits over seven strong innings.

The Cardinals did their only damage against Danks in the early going, as Rico Washington doubled and later scored on Brian Martin's two-out RBI single in the second, putting Springfield in front early at 1-0.

Springfield starter Mike Parisi pitched well too, but only received one run worth of support. Frisco finally got to Parisi in the fifth, as Kevin Richardson homered with a man aboard, putting Frisco ahead to stay at 2-1. Parisi surrendered another home run in the sixth, as Anthony Webster hit his fifth of the year, a solo shot to put the Riders up 3-1.

Parisi (3-2) worked a total of 5 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on eight hits. The right-hander struck out six and did not issue a walk.

Frisco rounded out the scoring, getting to reliever Rich Scalamandre for a pair of runs in the seventh to go up 5-1.

Springfield only had five hits on the night, with Rayner Laya and Brian Martin each enjoying two-hit games.

After dropping their third straight game, the Cards are now one full game behind Tulsa in the Texas League's North Division, marking the first time since April 23rd that the Cards have not held a share of first place. Springfield looks to get on track on Saturday night, sending lefty Rich Rundles (3-4) to the mound against Frisco's Kea Kometani, who will make his Double-A debut. Game time on Saturday night from Frisco is 7:05pm. The Cardinals return to Hammons Field after their 12-day road trip on Saturday, June 10th to face the Arkansas Travelers and Tulsa Drillers, in the final home stand of the first half. Don't forget about White Cardinals Cap Night as 5,000 fans will receive a free white Cardinals cap thanks to Coca-Cola on Saturday, June 17th. Tickets are available by calling (417) 863-2143 or online at www.springfieldcardinals.com.
