Drillers win, move into first
June 2, 2006 - Texas League (TL1)
Tulsa Drillers News Release
On a night when the Tulsa Drillers fell behind 3-0 and committed four errors, they still found themselves in sole possession of first place in the North Division standings of the Texas League. They moved into the top spot Friday night thanks to an offensive outburst that produced an 11-4 win in Corpus Christi. The win, combined with Springfield's 5-1 loss in Frisco moved the Drillers one game in front of the Cardinals in the standings.
After surrendering three runs to the Hooks in the second inning Friday, the Drillers offense answered with three runs of its own in the top of the third inning. Seth Smith extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a run-scoring double, and Joe Gaetti added an RBI-single in the inning.
Tulsa took the lead in the fourth inning. Chris Iannetta singled in front of Joe Koshansky's 13th home run of the season as the Drillers moved in front 5-3.
An error helped the Hooks cut the lead to 5-4 in the fifth inning, but a sacrifice fly by Matt Macri in the sixth restored Tulsa's 2-run lead.
The Drillers blew the game open with a 5-run ninth. They accomplished the rare feat of hitting for the cycle in one inning. With one out, Christian Colonel singled, and Troy Tulowtizki followed with his 6th homer of the season. After Smith flied out, Gaetti walked and Ian Stewart doubled. Iannetta then completed the cycle with a triple into the gap in right center field that increased the Drillers lead to 10-4. A double by Koshansky capped the inning and upped the margin to 11-4.
Starting pitcher Marc Kaiser gained the win to even his record at 4-4. In six innings, Kaiser allowed 8 hits and 4 runs (3 ER) while walking 2 and striking out 2.
Relievers Jentry Beckstead, Jim Miller and Alberto Arias each threw one shutout inning to complete the victory.
The Drillers will continue their series in Corpus Christi Saturday night. First pitch will be 7:05PM.
