
Road Warriors Slip Past Stingrays in the Shootout

North Charleston, S.C. - The South Carolina Stingrays (1-0-0-1) wrapped up the preseason with a 5-4 shootout loss to the Greenville Road Warriors (1-0-0-0) at the Carolina Ice Palace Saturday night. Forward Jordan Owens scored two goals and added an assist for the Stingrays.
The Road Warriors opened the scoring 2:30 into the contest when forward Jordie Johnston ripped a shot over the right shoulder of Stingrays goaltender Adam Morrison (SOL, 21 saves on 25 shots) from the right-wing circle. Defenseman Ryan Haggerty picked up the lone assist. Forward Brandon Hynes made it a 2-0 Road Warriors lead on the power play at the 12:16 mark with help from forward Ryan Garlock and defenseman Jace Coyle. With 37 seconds left in the period, Stingrays forward Andrew Cherniwchan cut the lead in half with a backhanded shot over the glove of Road Warriors netminder Carsen Chubak (W, 19 saves on 23 shots) from between the faceoff circles. Defensemen Derrick Pallis and Luka Vidmar added assists.
Owens tied the game with his first goal of the preseason 4:45 into the second period completing a 2-on-1 rush with forward Peter Boyd. Moments later, Owens put the Stingrays up 3-2 unassisted beating Chubak under the blocker from the right-wing circle. The Road Warriors responded with a pair of shorthanded goals 20 seconds apart to take back the advantage and make it 4-3 after two periods. Forward Elgin Pearce tied the contest at 12:00 assisted by Bretton Cameron followed by an unassisted tally by Guillaume Asselin at 12:20.
Boyd provided the game-tying goal at 6:08 of the third period from Owens and Vidmar. In the shootout, both teams capitalized in the second round. Owens slipped a shot past Chubak to start the frame then Greenville responded with a marker from Asselin. Forward Jean-Michel Rizk sealed the victory for the Road Warriors in the bottom of the seventh round. The Stingrays ended the contest 1-for-7 on the power play while the Road Warriors went 1-for-5.
The Stingrays kick off their 21st season of hockey in the Lowcountry on Saturday, October 19 against the defending Kelly Cup Champion Reading Royals at 7:35 p.m. in Reading, Pennsylvania and celebrate Opening Night, Stingrays Alumni Game, Zooperstars! and 2013-14 schedule giveaway presented by Savage Law Firm at the North Charleston Coliseum on Saturday, October 26 against their in-state rivals, the Greenville Road Warriors, at 7:05 p.m.
Hall of Fame players such as Jason Fitzsimmons, Dave Seitz, Brett Marietti, Nate Kiser, Rob Concannon and Matt Scherer along with fan-favorites Johann Kroll, Trevor Johnson and more return to the Coliseum ice for a pregame Alumni Game before the Stingrays battle the Greenville Road Warriors later that night.
