Peoria Rivermen News Release
Peoria, Ill. (October 26, 2008) - Steve Regier, Trent Whitfield and Jeff Woywitka all notched two points to help the Rivermen pick up two points in a 5-2 win over the Lake Erie Monsters on Sunday at Carver Arena. The Rivermen used five power-play goals over the two-game series with Lake Erie to improve to 5-0-0 all-time against the Monsters.
Peoria controlled the tempo from early in the first period but the Monsters put the first goal on the board at 9:21 of the first period. Rob Drummond won an offensive zone faceoff directly past Chris Holt to give the Monsters their only lead of the series.
The lead only lasted 41 seconds as Peoria raced down the ice and tied the game on Regier's fourth goal of the season. After a Woywitka slapshot from just inside the blue line, Charles Linglet was able to shove the puck across to crease to Regier who finished the job.
Ryan Reaves, in his season debut after battling a groin injury in the preseason, made his presence felt with an unassisted goal to open the second period. While the rest of his line went for a change, Reaves raced in on the fore check and converted a Monster's mistake as they left him the puck just to the side of the cage.
The Rivermen power-play unit would take care of scoring their next two goals. Chris Conner banked a shot from the corner off a defenseman and through Jason Bacashihua during a 5-on-3 opportunity. Whitfield and Nikolay Lemtyugov assisted on the goal that gave Peoria a 3-1 lead at 12:16 of the second period.
Lake Erie brought themselves back to within one with 12:01 remaining in regulation. T.J. Hensick blasted a slapshot over the glove of Holt and hit the inside cross-bar to put the pressure back on Peoria.
The game remained tight until the final three minutes and the Rivermen power play was given another chance. With Nathan Smith in the box for slashing, Regier scored his second of the night as he walked out of the corner and found the back of the net.
Regier now has at least one point in each of his last six games and leads the team with nine points (5g, 4a).
With 59.7 seconds to play, Whitfield solidified the lead with an empty-netter.
Holt made 20 saves to improve to 2-0-0 this season while, former Rivermen goaltender, Bacashihua was saddled with the loss in a 23 save performance.
