
Rivermen Re-sign Three, Add Two Others

Peoria, Ill. (September 24, 2004) â Head Coach/Director of Hockey Operations Jason Christie of the Peoria Rivermen of the ECHL announced today that defenseman Chad Starling, tough man David Kaczowka and left wing Garett Cameron have been re-signed for the 2004-2005 season. Christie also announced that defenseman Warren Toews and rookie center Jon Howse have also been signed. Terms of the deals were not disclosed.
With the additions, the Rivermen have signed 12 players for the 2004-2005 season, including centers Trevor Baker, Tyler Rennette and rookie Jon Howse; left wings Scott Turner, Ken Goetz and Garett Cameron; forwards Jason Notermann, David Kaczowka and rookie Travis Rycroft; right wing Joe Pereira; and defensemen Chad Starling and Warren Toews.
Starling â a 6-foot-6, 225-pound native of Delisle, Saskatchewan â registered six points and a +10 plus/minus in 29 games with Rivermen last season after being reassigned from the Houston Aeros of the American Hockey League (AHL) on January 30. After signing a two-way contract with Houston in the 2003 offseason, the 24-year-old backliner â who will be entering his fourth professional season and his fourth with the Rivermen this year â opened 2003-2004 with the Corpus Christi Rayz of the Central Hockey League (CHL), collecting 11 points (4g, 7a) in 35 games.
Kaczowka â a 6-foot-2, 235-pound native of Regina, Saskatchewan â tallied nine points (4g, 5a), 10 major penalties and 72 total penalty minutes (PIM) in just 15 games with the Rivermen in 2003-2004 after his reassignment by the NHL's Atlanta Thrashers from the Gwinnett Gladiators on March 1. The 23-year-old forward â who will be entering his fourth professional season and first full campaign with the Rivermen â set career marks for goals (5), assists (T-7) and points (12) last season, while notching 18 total major penalties and ranking second on the Rivermen with 190 PIM. He has averaged nearly five (5) PIM per game (4.75) over 129 career professional games.
Cameron â a 5-foot-9, 175-pound left wing from Grandora, Saskatchewan â led the team in goals (4), tied for second in plus/minus (+6) and tied for fourth in points (6) in eight playoff games. The 21-year-old â who will enter his first full season with the Rivermen in 2004-2005 â notched five points (2g, 3a) and a +2 plus/minus in 11 games with the Rivermen during the 2003-2004 regular season after signing as a free agent on March 5, 2004.
Toews â a 6-foot, 210-pound defenseman from Waskatenau, Alberta â posted eight assists in 33 games with the Texas Wildcatters as a rookie last season. Prior to joining the professional ranks, the 26-year-old competed for the University of Alberta Golden Bears of Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) for five seasons, compiling 75 points (12g, 63a) in 187 career games.
Howse â a 6-foot-2, 185-pound center from Corner Brook, Newfoundland â ranked second on the Peterborough Petes of the Major Junior "A" Ontario Hockey League (OHL) with 140 PIM last season, while collecting 35 points (10g, 25a) in 67 games. Over five seasons in Peterborough, the 21-year-old posted 139 points (55g, 84a) in 308 games.
The Peoria Rivermen are a proud affiliate of the NHL's St. Louis Blues and a member of the ECHL â America's Premier "AA" Hockey League. The Rivermen open their ninth season in the 28-team league on Friday, October 22, 2004, when they host the archrival Dayton Bombers at Carver Arena.
