Rivermen Net Second Straight Win 4-3 Over Rockford

Marek Schwarz won his second straight game with a stalwart performance in net while the Peoria Rivermen power play recorded three goals in a 4-3 win over the Rockford IceHogs at the MetroCentre on Sunday afternoon.

Making his second straight start in net, Schwarz (28 saves) stopped nine first period shots including a point-blank chance for Rockford, and followed that with a stellar third period with key saves down the stretch that preserved the win.

The teams traded first period goals, with Julian Talbot recording a man advantage marker at 8:06 to open the scoring. Charles Linglet's shot deflected off an IceHog defender to Talbot, who scored his team-leading 20th goal of the year for the 1-0 lead.

Derek Nesbitt fired the Rockford rejoinder at 15:44 off a Martin St. Pierre feed to tie the contest after the opening frame.

Mike Glumac made it 2-1 Rivermen (31-22-4-4) with his second goal in as many games and the only even strength marker of the contest for Peoria at 3:55 as he cut through the slot to grab the rebound off a Martin Kariya shot, tucking the puck past the left pad of Mike Brodeur (20 saves).

Peoria would then score the first of two five-on-three markers in the game, starting with Nikolay Lemtyugov's point blast from the right side that beat Brodeur over the right shoulder at 12:19 from Micki DuPont and Kariya.

Facing a 3-1 deficit entering the third period, Justin Fletcher came back with a power play goal for Rockford (33-20-3-6) at 5:01, closing the gap to a single goal for the next ten-plus minutes.

Once again Peoria was handed a full two-minute five-on-three advantage when Ryan Stokes picked up an elbowing call at 15:55, and then the Rockford bench picked up a minor while head coach Mike Havilland was ejected from the contest.

Jean-Guy Trudel struck at 16:06, just 11 seconds into the advantage to restore Peoria's two-goal lead, his first marker in 11 games and the eventual game winner.

But the resilient IceHogs refused to quit, with Michael Blunden recording a late power play goal to make it 4-3 at 18:26.

That play was followed by a tripping call against Alex Brooks with just 39 seconds remaining, and the IceHogs threw six skaters and the kitchen sink at Schwarz and the Rivermen without scoring, allowing Peoria to skate off with the win.

Peoria finished the game 3-for-6 on the power play, recording three power play goals for the first time since January 15 at Hamilton. Rockford went 2-for-8 with the man advantage.
