Peoria Rivermen News Release
Southaven, MS - The Peoria Rivermen gave up a goal in each period as they fell 3-2 in regulation to the Mississippi RiverKings in Landers Center Friday night. The loss, Peoria's first since November 21, drops the Rivermen back into second place in the SPHL standings with a rematch looming with the RiverKings Saturday night in Mississippi.
Mississippi started the scoring 13:31 into the first period when Benjamin Rubin took a doorstep feed from Sam Higgins and put it past Rivermen netminder Kyle Rank for the 1-0 RiverKings lead.
The RiverKings doubled their lead at the 7:18 mark of the second when Mark Pustin got past the Peoria defense for a breakaway and beat Rank for a 2-0 Mississippi lead. Peoria got on the board at 12:31 of the first when Alec Hagaman buried a rebound past Mississippi goaltender Peter Di Salvo to cut the RiverKings' lead in half. The Rivermen tied the game at two when Matt Summers jammed a rebound under the pad of Di Salvo for the 2-2 score.
Mississippi retook the lead on the powerplay after Matt Summers went off for hooking at the 9:13 mark of the third period. With 9:51 left in the third a shot from the point by Ian Young was redirected past Rank by Linden Bahm to give Mississippi a 3-2 lead they would not relinquish.
Rank stopped 24 of 27 shots in net for Peoria, and took his first regulation loss in over a month. Rank's last defeat in regular time came 2-1 at Mississippi November 3 when he stopped a season-high 37 shots.
