Mississippi RiverKings News Release
Huntsville, AL - In a tight checking, physical game, the Mississippi RiverKings put five pucks past Huntsville goaltender Matt Hache en route to a 5-2 victory over the Havoc in Huntsville.
The RiverKings got on the board just 1:12 into the game as Matt Whitehead slapped a Darrell Stoddard pass from the point through the legs of Matt Hache to give the 'Kings an early 1-0 lead.
In the second period, Ray Ortiz answered back as he capitalized on a loose rebound in front of David Wilson to tie the game at two just 5:08 into the frame. But the RiverKings would not be down for long. Just after his penalty expired, Tanner Hlookoff received a pass from Deven Stillar as he broke through the defense and beat Hache one-on-one to give the RiverKings the lead after 40 minutes.
It was not the goal scoring that took center stage in the second frame, but the physical play. Over a span of seven minutes, six fighting majors were assed as Hlookoff and Dennis Sicard started the rough stuff at the 2:39 mark of the period. Two Minutes later, Jonathan LaFrance and Kevin Hamel dropped the gloves in a bout that looked to have been brewing in the first period. To finish off the battles in the second period, Gabriel Boutin-Gagnon and Sicard scraped in a battle of former teammates.
In the third period, the RiverKings came out firing early. At the 1:04 mark, Mark Magnowski and Whitehead came in alone on Hache with Magnowski burying the puck past the Huntsville netminder to give the 'Kings a two goal edge. Just 30 seconds later, Cameron Sault fed Mike Tuomi a pass right in front of the Havoc net and he lifted it over the Huntsville netminder to give the RiverKings the 4-1 lead.
But Huntsville did not go away. On the powerplay, Mike MacDonald took a wrister from the top of the faceoff circle and beat Wilson blocker side through traffic to bring the game within two.
With Matt Hache on the bench, Darrell Stoddard poked the puck outside of the RiverKings zone and it trickled into the Huntsville net to give the RiverKings the 5-2 victory.
David Wilson (11-6-2) picked up the win as he stopped 38 of 40 shots against. Matt Hache (5-8-0) took the loss as he stopped 22 of 26 shots.
The RiverKings return home on Tuesday, February 14 to take on the Huntsville Havoc at 7:05. It's Valentine's Day at the Landers Center as the RiverKings will be giving away over $1,200 in prizes from the Melting Pot, Walls Limos and more! It's a Family 4 Pack where fans can purchase four red-level tickets, four hot dogs and four sodas for just $56, available exclusively on ticketmaster.com.
