Ice Bears Squeak by RiverHawks
February 11, 2012 - SPHL (SPHL)
Augusta RiverHawks News Release
For a long stretch of time it looked like the RiverHawks might be finally able to pick up a point against the Knoxville Ice Bears. However, a late goal on the power play gave the hosts a 1-0 victory over the RiverHawks Saturday night in Knoxville, TN.
Ice Bears' tough guy David Segal was the hero for Knoxville, as he beat RiverHawks' goaltender Peter Skoggard with help from Eric Slais and Ricky Helmbrecht. The goal was scored with just 27 seconds remaining in a goaltender interference penalty to Neil Graham of the RiverHawks. The goal was Segal's 14th of the season and his fourth game winning goal.
It was an intense duel between the two goaltenders, as both teams logged plenty of shots on goal. Skoggard made 28 saves, while Kyle Rank picked up his first shut out of the season stopping all 31 shots fired at him by the RiverHawks. RiverHawks' Captain Matt Auffrey led the way for his team with six shots on goal, but was unable to beat Rank.
The victory was the fifth-straight for the Ice Bears over the RiverHawks this season. This game differed dramatically from the previous four affairs both in how tight the game was, and in the relative lack of fisticuffs. It was the first time this season the Ice Bears did not score five goals against the RiverHawks, and there was just one fight and no misconduct penalties levied against either team.
The win moves the Ice Bears into sole possession of second place in the Southern Professional Hockey League standings, six points behind the RiverHawks with one game in hand. A victory would have clinched a playoff spot for the RiverHawks, making them the first team to do so in the SPHL.
The RiverHawks are back in action on Phoenix Refrigeration Ice at the James Brown Arena Friday, February 10th as the RiverHawks play the Fayetteville FireAntz. The puck drops at 7:35pm.Tickets for the game are available through the RiverHawks' office and the James Brown Arena box office. Additional information on the Team, tickets, and schedule are available on the RiverHawks' home on the web, www.augustariverhawks.com or by calling 706-993-2645.
