Mississippi RiverKings News Release
SOUTHAVENâThe Memphis RiverKings' are hoping the game doesn't go to the dogs when the team takes on the Oklahoma City Blazers on Friday, Jan. 28âbut the dogs will definitely go to the game, as the âKings will spotlight the non-profit organization Olive Branch Humane Society.
Olive Branch Humane Society volunteers and animals will both be in attendance on the DeSoto Civic Center concourse. The Humane Society will conduct a cash raffle and sell merchandise during the game.
One of the animals in attendance will be Mack, a 3-month-old, wavy-haired, black retriever mix. Mack was found on the side of the road by a humane society volunteer, next to the dead bodies of his mother and siblings.
"He's very sweet," Adoption Coordinator Gail Dodson said. "His foster family tells me he's very active and full of himself and would love a family to play with."
The Humane Society is in the process of building a new facility for its animals, all of whom are currently being housed in foster care. The Society is in dire need of fencing and building supplies.
Inside the building, located at 7140 Hwy. 178 off Craft Rd, things are shaping up. Volunteers have done a great deal of painting and preparation. There will be a medical room specifically for treating the animals and a cattery where felines can live and play freely.
"We've put a lot of bright colors on the walls, along with butterflies and dragonflies," Society Volunteer Ruth Zurka said. "Our junior volunteers, who work as hard as anybody, wanted some bright colors. It is a nice, happy place. It's gonna be a place we can all enjoy."
Humane Society supporters will have new options as well. Businesses can sponsor kennels, which will include not only the organization's name on the kennel, but also a banner that will go offsite for Society events. Additionally, there will be a Wall of Honor for sponsors and major donors.
The shelter is a no-kill shelter with the exception of aggression and terminal illness. The Humane Society checks past vet records, the yard and house of potential owners and gives complete vaccinations, spays or neuters every animal that is adopted.
"That's the only way we can fight overpopulation," Zurka said. "Six to 8 million cats and dogs die every year in shelters because of overpopulation. Now that's a lot of animals that die every year for no good reason.
"Our interest is rescuing abandoned, abused and neglected animals, and we are so excited about the opportunity to do so in this new building."
