CHL Honors Former Commissioner, Hockey Pioneer Bud Poile

Published on January 27, 2005 under Central Hockey League (CHL) News Release

The Central Hockey League today announced that the CHL regular-season

champions each year will receive the "Bud Poile Governors' Cup Trophy" in

honor of Poile's significant lifelong contributions to the sport of hockey.

Norman "Bud" Poile, a 1990 inductee into the Hockey Hall of Fame and

commissioner of the Central Hockey League for eight seasons, passed away

earlier this month in Vancouver.

"We are cognizant of both the historical legacy that Mr. Poile has left behind

and the many people within our league and industry that he touched during his

Hall of fame career," said CHL President Brad Treliving. "We felt it appropriate

to honor Mr. Poile's service with annual recognition on our regular-season championship trophy." The Governors' Cup previously was "Presented annually to the Central Hockey League Regular Season Champions in honor of member team Governors."

A veteran of World War II, Poile excelled in numerous capacities during his lifetime of service to the game of hockey. Poile spent eight seasons in the National Hockey League as a player, and was a member of the Stanley Cup Champion Toronto Maple Leafs in 1947. He served as commissioner of both the Central (1976-1984) and International (1984-1989) Hockey Leagues and was the first general manager of both the Philadelphia Flyers and Vancouver Canucks NHL franchises. He also coached for 13 seasons in the Western Hockey League, with Edmonton and San Francisco. In 1989, he was honored by the National Hockey League, receiving the Lester Patrick Award outstanding service to hockey in the United States. A year later, he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.

"My father devoted much of his career to expanding the footprint of hockey throughout North America, and was truly proud of his accomplishments with the Central Hockey League," said son David Poile, general manager of the National Hockey League's Nashville Predators. "The impact of pioneers like my father can still be seen today in the regard of the CHL and the hockey traditions forged in places like Oklahoma City, Tulsa, Wichita and Fort Worth. It is a touching honor for our family to have the CHL's regular-season championship trophy renamed in his memory."
