RiverKings Weekend Features Two Big Events
November 14, 2007 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Mississippi RiverKings News Release
Southaven, MS --- This weekend the RiverKings face the Youngstown Steelhounds and the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs. Both games start at 7:05pm and will take place at the DeSoto Civic Center. While the RiverKings look to avenge their losses (all three have come against these two teams) they also look to honor two wonderful causes.
Friday will be Guns and Hoses night, a salute to area emergency management personnel. Honoring those who risk their lives to help others, area firefighters, police officers, and other emergency personnel will be offered a special $5 ticket rate.
"We know and appreciate all that these special men and women do to help the lives of others," Michael Rice, RiverKings staff member and organizer of this event, said. "Honoring them at a RiverKings game seems like the least we can do."
Fans attending the game are in for a treat as Horn Lake and Southaven's SWAT teams will be in attendance. Officer Mark Ayers, of Olive Branch Police will drop the ceremonial puck, and the Horn Lake Fire department will present color guard. Special on-ice intermission activities will also take place.
Saturday the RiverKings will help a nonprofit who touches the lives of others in a different but just as important way, The Food Bank.
The Food Bank, located in Memphis, TN, serves 31 counties throughout Tennessee, Arkansas, and Mississippi; striving for a hunger free Mid-South community. "Eighteen of the counties we service are in Northern Mississippi", David Stephens, Community Relations Director for The Food Bank stated. "We enjoy having this relationship with the RiverKings. It helps us to get into the public, and gives us an opportunity to show Northern Mississippi that we support so many communities in the area."
This year the RiverKings have asked area banks to support this particular evening by collecting nonperishable food for The Food Bank at their locations. Bank Plus, Sycamore Bank, SunTrust, First Tennessee, and Community Bank are all participating in this Battle of the Banks.
"We have had a great showing of support from the area banks," Dave Mattice, Director of Business Operations for the RiverKings, said. "We are excited for this event. We hope to crown banks as winners for this Battle of the Banks competition. We will have one winner for the bank who collects/donates the most food by weight as well as a winner for the bank whose game attendees are the most spirited."
"I love the Bank idea," Stephens commented. "It's a neat concept - Bank for Bank. Partnering with the RiverKings has always been successful for us. Success is in pounds of food as well as awareness for our cause."
The Food Bank last year distributed 10 ½ million pounds of food throughout the Mid-South. Of that 10 ½ million pounds 106,411 pounds went to DeSoto County.
To help The Food Bank in their quest to rid the Mid-South of hunger, the RiverKings are offering an incentive to fans who donate nonperishable foods at participating banks or at the doors of the DeSoto Civic Center on Saturday.
"Anyone who stops by a participating bank and donates food will receive a special coupon for a complimentary ticket with the purchase of an additional ticket," explained Rice. "If fans wish to donate a bag of food at the door just prior to the game on Saturday representatives from The Food Bank will be on hand to collect the items and pass out these coupons, fans should enter through the West Entrance of the Civic Center to receive the coupon for this special offer."
