SOUTHAVEN—Two, Four, Six, Eight: SMS Dance Team is more than great! In fact, the Southaven Middle School Dance Team has been nationally ranked two years in a row, and plans to three-peat this year at the dance and cheer national competition in Orlando, Fla. in February.

Getting there, however, is the trick. To that end, the SMS Dance Team Boosters are hosting their second annual Dance Boosters Golf Tournament on Saturday, Aug. 28 at Wedgewood Golf Course in Olive Branch.

The Memphis RiverKings are participating in the tournament by providing a team, hole sponsorship, silent auction and raffle items. Companies can buy a hole sponsorship for $100; a four-man team costs $300. The tournament's "Ultimate Package" costs $400 and buys a team, three balls each for the putting contest, two mulligans and two red tees per player. There will also be longest drive and closest-to-the-pin competitions.

Prizes include a Delta Marsh fishing boat from Chuck's Marine for the first hole-in-one on a specified hole; a Ben Hogan Golf Bag; Top Flite specialty putter; free rounds of golf at Tunica National Golf Course, Stonebridge Golf Course and Riverbend Golf Course; and more.

Two years ago, the Southaven Middle School team placed 5th in the nation. Last year the team fought their way up a notch to capture the 4th place ranking in the Jr. Pom Division among 320 other schools. In June the team locked their bid to attend Nationals while competing at the statewide competition, hosted by Mississippi State University.

It's the second year of dance and cheer for Kim Lyon's daughter, 13-year-old Kristina. Last year was a year of firsts and challenges for both mother and daughter. Lyon chaired the first tournament by default.

"It was another mother's idea to have the golf tournament, actually," Lyon said. "But she got really sick, and it was dumped in my lap with just six weeks left. I'd never been on a golf course before, so I had to just feel my way through everything."

Lyon, and the tournament, had good results: with 20 teams playing and as many hole sponsors, the Boosters raised enough money to send the girls to Florida. This year, Lyon has recruited 19 teams so far, with a goal of 30, and has received commitments for 26 hole sponsors.

The girls and their parents are ecstatic about their success so far, Lyon said, and are hopeful they can capture one of the top three spots this year.

"We are so proud of them," Lyon said. "They worked so hard last year, and they are putting 100 percent into getting ready for the competition. Every little bit we get helps, so we hope this year is the best yet."

The scramble format tournament includes a complimentary barbecue dinner and awards banquet afterward. The tournament begins with a shotgun start at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 28. Cost is tax deductible. For more information please call Lyon at 662-349-3990 or Toni Griffin at 662-342-0690.
