Corpus Christi IceRays News Release
Corpus Christi, Texas: August 13, 2004 â The Corpus Christi Rayz added grit and toughness to their team Friday afternoon with the announcement that they had signed rookie left winger, Britt Dougherty to a one-year contract. Dougherty will make his way to Corpus Christi and join the Rayz for training camp in early October.
Dougherty, 20, is a strong, young, physical player who spent the last two seasons with the Regina Pats in the Western Hockey League. Standing 6' 2" and weighing 215lbs., the Swift Current, Saskatchewan native becomes the largest of the twelve players the Rayz have signed this off-season. Over the past two seasons in Regina, Dougherty combined for 193 penalty minutes in 92 games.
"His statistics aren't a true indication of just how tough he is. Most of his penalty minutes came from fighting majors," said Rayz Head Coach Ken McRae. "At 20 years old, he will continue to develop all aspects of his game. Britt is a guy that does whatever it takes to help his team win games. Those are the kinds of players that coaches, fans and teammates really like and respect."
As a 17-year old in the 2001-02 season, Dougherty racked up ten goals, 19 points and 95 penalty minutes in only 39 games, in a Saskatchewan midget league for the Tisdale Trojans, and was a member of the Air Canada Cup winning team. At the conclusion of last season, Britt was voted as one of the "Top Ten Toughest Players in the WHL."
The Rayz will begin the 2004-05 season in Austin on October 22nd, and host the Laredo Bucks in the first ever event at the AmericanBank Center on November 5th and 7:05pm.
