RiverKings to Host Noah's Gift 5K Race Volunteers on Tuesday

March 3, 2012 - SPHL (SPHL)
Mississippi RiverKings News Release

SOUTHAVEN-In addition to the "Guns "˜N Hoses" competitions, the Locks of Love hair cuts and shaving players' heads to benefit Pink Heals Mid-South (firemen for women's cancer awareness), the Tuesday, March 6 RiverKings game will feature an organization and initiative close to the heart of the hockey team: the Noah's Gift endowed fund at the Community Foundation of North Mississippi.

"Noah's Gift" was established at the Community Foundation of Northwest Mississippi in November of 2010 shortly after the tragic death of Noah Costa, son of Robin G. Costa, president of Maddox Foundation (the RiverKings' ownership group). The RiverKings were instrumental in producing the Noah's Gift 5K Run-Walk-Skate (NG5K) event in October of last year.

Blue Cross Blue Shield has donated 40 tickets for NG5K members to attend the game, where a photo slideshow from the 5K will be shown and volunteers will be selling commemorative race shirts and wristbands during the game to help raise funds for the endowment. Some tickets are still available courtesy of Blue Cross Blue Shield; participants and volunteers who would like to take advantage of these may contact Noah's Gift event coordinator Glenda Gurley at the RiverKings office, 662.342.1755 or glenda@riverkings.com. Folks who attend the game that night and wear their race shirt will receive $3 off any Red Level ticket.

The fund offers grants to deserving young people to pursue an extraordinary experience of some kind. Almost $15,000 was raised for the fund through the event. Currently, the fund has earned about $48,000; however, the Community Foundation of Northwest Mississippi has committed to donate an additional $12,500 to the fund if it reaches the $50,000 mark by the end of March.

Foundation leadership and board members will also attend the game that night along with a special pre-game party to celebrate the Foundation's recent successes as a whole. Maddox Foundation has a long-standing challenge grant with Community Foundation to match Endowment donations dollar for dollar up to $10 million through the end of 2013.

"Community Foundation is a wonderful tool for investing money, making donations and improving the quality of life not only in DeSoto County but in eight other counties," Robin G. Costa said. "As the RiverKings have coordinated our volunteer efforts and community initiatives, the team has followed the Community Foundation of Northwest Mississippi in those inclusive views.

"We - the Maddox Foundation and the RiverKings - are very proud to have participated in and alongside Community Foundation efforts since the first day of Maddox Foundation's ownership, and are very excited about what Community Foundation has planned for the future."

In other March 6 game activities, four lucky fans will have the opportunity to shave the heads of RiverKings players Paul D'Agostino, Kyle Lundale, Kevin Fukala and Scott Darling through a donation drawing. The funds collected will be donated to firefighters' organization Pink Heals Mid-South. "Locks of Love" hair cuts will be provided pre-game through 7:15 p.m. on the concourse courtesy of Sport Clips, who will also assist with the shaving of the players' heads. The first intermission will feature fire vs. police departments in a "Guns "˜N Hoses" competition, with EMHC ambulance paramedics serving as judges.

Fans can enter the donation drawing any time during this weekend's games (Friday, March 2 and Saturday, March 3). The drawing for the first person and player will be on Monday night, March 5 at the RiverKings Coach's Show, which is broadcast live on Sports 56 AM radio from O'Charley's restaurant in Southaven from 7-8 p.m. The drawing for the second person and player will be on Tuesday afternoon at the RiverKings Pre-Game Warm-Up at the Fillin Station Grille at 5:45 p.m. (the event runs from 4:30-6 p.m.). The drawings for the third and fourth persons and players will occur during the game on March. 6. Fans must be present to win.

In addition to the Pre-Game Warm-Up event at Fillin Station Grille before every game, fans can wrap up their evenings by joining the entire team at the T.G.I. Friday's Post-Game Party. During the next three games, fans can nominate their favorite civic-minded teen to win the RiverKings "Teen Star" Award, which will be presented to the top three candidates on Mar. 16, and fans who like the team's Official Facebook Page will receive $3 off a ticket to tomorrow night's game (Mar. 3).
