RiverHawks Defeat Cottonmouths 5-1
March 3, 2012 - SPHL (SPHL)
Augusta RiverHawks News Release
The Augusta RiverHawks put forth perhaps their most impressive performance of the season Saturday night at the James Brown Arena as they defeated the Columbus Cottonmouths 5-1. The victory avenged a 4-2 loss Friday night at the hands of the Cottonmouths, and expanded the RiverHawks' lead in the race for top spot in the SPHL.
During their previous five matchups this season Friday night's game was the only contest between the two clubs that had been decided by more than one goal and it looked like it was going to be another tight affair after one period of play. The game was scoreless until there was just 1:05 left in the stanza, when forward Kyle Watson rifled a puck just under the cross bar behind Cottonmouths' goaltender Ian Vigier. However, the lead would be short-lived as Greg Beller would score mere seconds later for the Cottonmouths, knotting the score back at one.
Quickly in the second period the RiverHawks were able to regain the lead, as Neil Graham scored the eventual game winning goal, firing a shot past Vigier off of a nice feed from Matt Auffrey. Four minutes later the lead was extended to two-goals, when Jim Gehring scored his first of two on the night.
With the game still feeling like it could go either way, the RiverHawks laid the hammer down on the Cottonmouths in the third period. Gehring and Watson each scored their second goals of the game to make it a 5-1 score and to send the RiverHawks' fans home happy.
The RiverHawks received a fantastic performance in net, as goaltender Peter Skoggard made 30 saves to backstop the victory. The victory was Skoggard's tenth of the season and third in a row.
The win gives the RiverHawks a seven point advantage on the second place Knoxville Ice Bears, and a nine point advantage on the Cottonmouths who sit in third. The RiverHawks now have just two regulation losses in their last 15 games.
The RiverHawks are back in action on Phoenix Refrigeration Ice at the James Brown Arena Friday, March 9th as they face the Knoxville Ice Bears. The puck drops at 7:35pm .Tickets for the game are available through the RiverHawks' office and the James Brown Arena box office.
