Mississippi RiverKings News Release
Southaven, Miss. - The Mississippi RiverKings worked their way back in the win column with a 3-1 victory over the Mississippi Surge at the Landers Center on Saturday night.
The Surge picked the first goal of the game early in the second period as Mark Pawlowski's shot from the point found its way through traffic to beat Scott Darling five-hole as the Surge took a 1-0 lead.
The 'Kings peppered Kiefer Smiley with shots all game, but it would not show on the scoreboard until the 8:35 mark of the third period as Chev Wilson fed Darrell Stoddard a pass in the slot and the RiverKings' captain buried a one-timer past the Surge netminder to tie the game at one.
Five minutes later, the RiverKings capitalized again. Kevin Hamel let a shot go from the point and Nick Vandenbeld's deflection was enough to force the puck past Smiley to give the RiverKings the 2-1 lead. Stoddard picked up his second goal of the game, an empty netter, with just 23 seconds left to play as the 'Kings knocked off the Surge 3-1.
Scott Darling (12-16-1) picked up the win as he stopped 18 of 19 shots against. Kiefer Smiley (16-9-2) took the loss as he turned aside 41 of 43 shots against.
With the victory, the RiverKings temporarily move into seventh place in the SPHL, pending the result of the Huntsville game against the Pensacola Ice Flyers.
The RiverKings return to the ice on Tuesday, March 6 as they take on the Huntsville Havoc at 7:05. It's Guns and Hoses Night as the RiverKings will honor our local firefighters and police officers. Then, after the game, Kyle Lundale, Kevin Fukala, Scott Darling and Paul D'Agostino will have their heads shaved by lucky RiverKings fans benefiting Locks for Love.
