RiverKings stay alive with must-win at Topeka

March 13, 2005 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Mississippi RiverKings News Release

TOPEKA—Tim Plett scored twice and added two assists to help the Memphis RiverKings stay alive in the Northern Conference playoff race with a 5-2 win over the Topeka Tarantulas Sunday in Topeka. The RiverKings moved to within five points of front running Tulsa for that final playoff position with three games remaining.

To make the post season, the ‘Kings need to win their final three while Tulsa needs to lose all three. Oklahoma City also must lose two of their final three and that one win must be the game with Tulsa. These scenarios do not include the other teams, New Mexico and Fort Worth, that are still alive.

The RiverKings second line of Plett, Travis Banga and Allan Carr accounted for four of the team's five goals with Carr getting credit for the game-winner at 6:22 of the third period.

Memphis took a 2-0 lead with two goals in the final 1:35 of the first period with Plett's first of the game and Parsons' 51st of the season. Topeka scored two in the second including former RiverKing Chris Migliore's eighth of the season to tie the game 2-2 entering the third.

But it was Carr, Plett and Banga exploding for goals to give the RiverKings the playoff-life saving win. A loss would have eliminated them from contention.

Goalie J. F. Racine picked up his first win in a Memphis uniform since January 23 with 23 saves on 25 shots.

Memphis will return home for the final three games of the regular season beginning with Amarillo on Thursday night at 7:05 at the DeSoto Civic Center.
