Corpus Christi IceRays News Release
Hidalgo, TX - The Corpus Christi Rayz ended one streak on Saturday night, while they kept another one alive. Dave Gilmore paced the scoring with his first hat trick of the season to lead all scorers as the Rayz beat the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees 6-3. The win snapped Corpus Christis ten-game winless streak and improved the Rayz undefeated streak against Rio Grande Valley to ten games. The Rayz climbed back to .500 with the win and will finish the season series with the Killer Bees Thursday night at the American Bank Center.
In the first game of a home and home series with their division rivals, the Rayz got off to a perfect start. Gilmore scored 55 seconds into the hockey game on a power play. It would be his first of three power play goals, and gave the Rayz a lead they would never surrender. A second Gilmore goal followed by a Blair Stayzer tally opened up a 3-0 advantage for Corpus Christi.
The Bees came back with three straight goals from Jason Hawes, Blaz Emersic and Joe Guenther tied the game early in the third period. However, the Rayz answered back with their second three goal run of the game. Gilmore recaptured the lead on the power play 7:34 into the third, and then Ryan Carter caped off the scoring with a late shorthanded and power play goal.
After being held to seven goals in six games coming into the game, the Rayz found the breakout game they were looking for finding the back of the net six times. Josh Blackburn did his part in net for Corpus Christi as he made 40 saves to improve his record to 6-0 against Rio Grande Valley. The Rayz were outstanding on special teams going 4-8 on the power play and holding to Bees to one goal on ten man advantage opportunities.
The Corpus Christi Rayz will now be off until Thursday night when they begin their final weekend of the season at home against Rio Grande Valley. The Rayz will then conclude their year at home versus Austin on Saturday night on Fan Appreciation Night. Tickets start as low as $10 for the general public and $6 for Spring Break students with a valid school ID. For more information, please call the Rayz at 814-PUCK.
